Before you indulge in the festivities, get acquainted with the city of Munich. The capital of Bavaria and Germany’s third largest city with just over 1.3 million people, Munich is a very walkable city with a small-town atmosphere despite its size. Head to the medieval square of Marienplatz to get a taste for the city’s architectural heritage. Despite suffering heavy damage during World War II, the city has rebuilt most of its historical sites to their original specifications.
The Neues Rathaus or New Town Hall is a gorgeous neo-Gothic building with a massive 90-metre façade. Inside you can marvel at the stain-glass windows and gorgeous vaulted ceilings. The Rathaus also boasts one of the largest motorized Glockenspiel in the world. Every day at 11am, noon and 5pm, 32 life-size figurines spring to life and put on a motorized performance in accompaniment to the chiming of the hour. Marienplatz is also home to the Frauenkirche, Munich’s main cathedral. Built in the fifteenth century, the Frauenkirche is distinguished by its twin onion dome towers that rise almost 100 metres in the air. If museums are more your beat, be sure to visit the Alte Pinakothek, a massive art gallery housing some of Europe’s best art from the fourteenth through eighteenth centuries, as well as the Deutsches Museum, which is the oldest and largest science museum in the world.
Of course, the highlight of your trip and many German vacations is Oktoberfest. Bavaria has celebrated Oktoberfest in one form or another since the Middle Ages. It’s the world’s most famous beer festival and only grows more popular each year. For 16 to 18 days in late September through the first weekend of October, Munich transforms into a giant autumn festival where the season is celebrated, delicious treats are enjoyed, and (of course) refreshing beer is guzzled by the litre. Take a tour to acquaint yourself with the history of the festival and the heritage of Bavarian beer culture. Then cut loose and celebrate alongside gregarious Bavarians with a litre of Marzenbier, traditionally an amber lager made specifically for the festival. Enjoy the traditional music, drink the beer alongside boisterous company, and feast on the bounty of wurst (sausage), knodel (dumplings), and brezen (pretzels) to be had at the festival.
There’s no better time to travel to Germany and visit Munich than during the height of its most famous festival.
