Paris & the River Seine: Paris River Cruise

8 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,288

‘Paris is always a good idea,’ said Audrey Hepburn. We couldn’t agree more, but there’s more to France than its charismatic capital. Cruise the Seine to explore a countryside that compliments one of the world’s most beautiful cities.

Please see LEFT BAR for ship details and other cruise info.

This exquisite 8-day cruise down the Seine takes you through a region that inspired Van Gough, Monet, Cezanne, and countless others, before returning to Paris, a city synonymous with romance and refinement.

Embarking in Paris, prepare for a full day walking the footsteps of Europe’s artistic masters. Visit Van Gogh’s final resting place, then journey through Chateau d’Auvers, a multimedia museum exploring Daubigny, Cezannne, Monet, and other greats. Then sail on to historic Rouen, where you’ll have the option of walking tours through this medieval town. Monet in particular was taken by its gothic architecture – rare in France at the time. Gaining the complete picture of the area’s history would take weeks, but these walking tours offer a good start, rewarding you with some beautiful photos.

Enjoy a walking tour of the cliffs along the Normandy coast, including the fishing village of Etretat. Here, you’re following not only the great painters, but writers such as Victor Hugo and Flaubert. A guide takes you through many of the sights, including Honfleur and the Vieux Bassin. Exploring Normandy further, you may opt for a day tour that takes you to see the 70 metre long Bayezux Tapestry, showing the conquest of England by William the Conqueror. If you’d prefer a more modern slice of this region’s history, embark on a Battlefield Tour, recalling the famous Normandy invasion during WW2.

Explore the remains of Chateau Gaillard, once the proud fortress of Richard LionHeart, then go on to Giverny, the town that charmed Monet so much, he chose to stay until his death. Turning back towards Paris, you’ll have the option of visiting – and skipping the line at – Versailles, palace of the Sun King, Louis XIV. This is one of Paris’ must-see attractions, despite being located some distance from the city. Your appetite for splendour sated, return to the City of Lights itself for a magical day ideal for any first timer, or return visitor. Your Paris city tour explores Montmarte, the hilly, picturesque neighbourhood that offered Picasso, Renoir, Toulouse-Letrec and many others an inspiring view of their city. A hint of their bohemian spirit lives on as you explore the laneways.

Spend the afternoon exploring Paris your way with an optional tour. For art lovers, a visit to the Louvre is a must. The Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa are the (typically crowded) star attractions, but over 30,000 pieces from across the world are housed here. Seeing the whole museum in one visit is nearly impossible, so do a little homework before you arrive to ensure you see the works that interest you. If you’ve had your ‘art fix’ for this trip, head for Le Marais, an aristocratic district that embodies French sidewalk style (we recommend at least two cafe stops). It’s packed with history, and in recent decades has become the epicentre of Paris’ LGBT community. It also puts you within reach of majestic Notre Dame, so take in another Paris icon before you depart.

Since its debut in 2009 the Amadeus Diamond has set new standards in European river cruising. This river cruiser is a nothing other than a floating luxury hotel, impressing its passengers from the moment they step on board. Allow this grand vessel to lure you away from normality - perhaps by inducing you to read an absorbing book in a chaise lounge on the sundeck, or to sample a relaxing massage. Get to see fascinating countries and meet interesting people over a convivial cup of coffee in the Amadeus-Club or, while practicing your golf on the putting green on the sundeck.

Day 5

Caudebec en Caux

Today you can choose between two exciting optional all-day excursions - both equally appealing. The first takes you along the famous Normandy beaches where the allied troops landed in 1944. During the tour you'll visit the landing sites at Pointe du Hoc and Omaha Beach, the American cemetery in Colleville and the former Arromanches harbour which the allied forces built to transport further troops to land. As an alternative, you can take a tour to Bayeux, Caen and Pont l'eveque which focuses on the treasures of the landscape. With lush green meadows, rustic half-timbered houses and apple orchards as far as the eye can see, Normandy quite rightly impresses visitors, year in, year out. You'll visit the historic towns of Caen and Bayeux where you can walk in the footsteps of William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy and subsequent King of England. Later you can explore the community of Pont l'eveque which is famous for its cheeses. It's also home to numerous traditional half-timbered houses which you can admire as you take a gentle stroll through the area. In the evening, you will return to the Amadeus Diamond before setting sail upstream.

Day 6

Les Andelys and Vernon

This morning your vessel will arrive in Les Andelys, one of the most beautiful towns along the Seine. This is the starting point for an optional morning excursion to the Chateau Gaillard (built in 1196), the castle of Richard the Lionheart. Visitors can enjoy breath-taking views of the river and surrounding landscape. The tour then leads on to the town of Giverny, where the famous impressionist Claude Monet lived until his death in 1926. Take a look around his house and the magnificent garden which inspired the artist in many of his paintings. After lunch there's a chance to visit one of the world's best known buildings - the magnificent Palace of Versailles. Originally a small hunting lodge, the palace was extended to its current size under the rule of Louis XIV and is now one of Europe's largest palaces. The tour takes you through the private regal rooms and into the world-famous Hall of Mirrors. A detour to the lush castle gardens is also a must. In the evening it's time to head back to the Amadeus Diamond with lots of new memories. The vessel travels from Les Andelys via Vernon to Poissy while you're out and, once you're back on board, continues to Paris.
