Porto and Enticing Douro by River Cruise: Porto to Porto

Duration
12 Days
Prices:
On request

Spend 12 days exploring the charming region of the Douro River Valley, one of Europe's most unspoiled regions and Port country. Discover Porto, the beautiful City of Bridges, then embark on a 7-night Ama Waterways river cruise as you taste historic wines and soak up beautiful landscapes.

This 12-day cruise on the beautiful Douro River departs from Porto, inviting passengers to try Portugal’s most famous wine before sailing upriver into Spain.

Begin with three nights in Porto, Portugal’s second city, as gorgeous as it is gritty. Take in the views from the miradouros, sample some port wine on the Gaia side of the Douro’s banks, and bask in the opulence of Sao Francisco Church and the Palacio da Bolsa. No need to rush. You’ll have one day of access to Porto’s vintage tour buses, and another day at leisure to pick up any sights you missed before boarding the luxurious AmaVida.

After a night onboard to meet your fellow passengers and settle in, sail to Regua and visit the Palacio de Mateus. The gardens in particular rank among the most beautiful in all of Portugal. The following day, a shore excursion takes you to Castelo Rodrigo, the ‘White Village,’ offering views as far as Spain – which just happens to be your next destination. Before crossing the border, enjoy a walking tour through Castelo Rodrigo, rewarded of course with a tasting of local produce!

The following day’s journey takes you to Salamanca, a World Heritage listed town that preserves the Middle Ages within its ‘living museum.’ Visit the house of Shells and Plaza Mayor, before lunch and a flamenco show completes your taste of Spain. Perhaps one day you’ll return for more? Lunch the following day is at Quinta da Avessada, combining traditional hospitality with entertainment. It’s also a great place to learn about the history of the Alto Douro before enjoying some tastings both here, and at Quinta do Seixo.

Your last day on the Douro takes you to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies, famous for its tiles, and its staircase of nearly 700 steps. Embark on a hiking tour, concluding in a well-earned sampling of local hams, wines, and other Portuguese specialties before visiting the Episcopal Palace Museum. A home-cooked dinner at the centuries-old Alpenduranda Monastery completes the experience before you return to Porto.

You’ll have a head-start on a guided tour of Porto’s historic quarter, but it might help put some of your discoveries in perspective – capped off with another port tasting of course!
