Belmond Royal Scotsman: Classic Rail Journey

Travel on a luxury train from Edinburgh through the magnificent Highlands of Scotland. Sit back in a comfortable seat and view spectacular scenery, visit historic castles, dine and sleep on board.

This 5-day round trip from Edinburgh takes you to Scotland’s finest regions in style, including the Lochs, Ballindalloch Castle and Rothiemurchus Estate.

Depart Edinburgh bound for Glen Ord Distillery, via Keith and Inverness. Your train continues through the beautiful countryside to Plockton, where you’ll have the option of a boat trip to see wild seals. Then spend the night overlooking Loch Alsh to the Isle of Skye. The next day, visit Eilean Donan and Ballindalloch Castles, and enjoy authentic highland tales as you admire displays of traditional weaponry. Your final full day takes you to Rothiemurchus Estate, where you can enjoy sports such as fishing and clay-pigeon shooting, or just take a tour. Stop in at Glamis Castle on your way to Dunkeld, then return to Edinburgh via an overnight in Dundee.

Day 1

Edinburgh to Keith

Today you will depart from Edinburgh Station (at 13:42) and travel north, crossing the Firth of Forth via the magnificent Forth Railway Bridge. You will enjoy a leisurely afternoon tea as you pass Arboath, Montrose and Aberdeen before arriving in Keith. In the evening enjoy an informal dinner and perhaps a nightcap with your fellow guests in the Observation Car.

Day 2

Keith to Kyle of Lochalsh

This morning, breakfast is served as the train leaves Keith and travels through Inverness, on its way to Glen Ord Distillery. Later you will enjoy a delicious lunch as the train heads towards Kyle of Lochalsh. Here you can explore Plockton - perhaps take a boat trip to see wild seals or enjoy a dram in the Plockton Hotel. Spend the night on board in Kyle of Lochalsh. Dinner is formal, followed by entertainment in the Observation Car, which offers mesmerising views over Loch Alsh to the Isle of Skye.

Day 3

Kyle of Lochalsh to Boat of Garten

After breakfast you can choose to visit Eilean Donan castle before the train heads north to Inverness, then south to Carrbridge where guests disembark and explore the romantic Ballindalloch Castle. The night is spent on board at Boat of Garten on the private Strathspey Railway. After an informal dinner, our highlander regales guests with tales and weaponry displays.

Day 4

Boat of Garten to Dundee

The day begins with a visit to the stunning Rothiemurchus Estate, where fishing, clay pigeon shooting, or a tour of the estate can be enjoyed. Rejoining the train at Kingussie, lunch is served during the journey south to Dunkeld, you disembark for a visit to Glamis Castle. After rejoining the train in Perth, relax and enjoy a formal dinner. Overnight stay on board in Dundee.

Day 5

Dundee to Edinburgh

After breakfast the train heads back to Edinburgh and the end of the adventure. You will arrive back into the station at 9:45am.

Special diets can be accommodated with our Chef. Please be sure to tell us in advance of any allergies, food related or not.

Please advise The Royal Scotsman office or your travel agent of any health restrictions before travelling with us. No specific vaccinations are required for entry into the UK. It is advised, however, that you consult your doctor or physician for requirements based on your travel itinerary, or for any personal health recommendations relating to your journey. Please note that there are no professional medical facilities on The Royal Scotsman.

Smoking Policy
In accordance with Scottish Law, smoking is not permitted on board.

Luggage and Storage On Board
Cabins have limited space, therefore we recommend each guest travels with one suitcase and one carry-on bag. Twin State Cabins have storage space under each bed measuring 71cm x 23cm. If necessary, facilities are available at The Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh for luggage storage during your journey. If you are staying at another hotel, please ask the Hotel Manager. Prior to boarding, please attach a Royal Scotsman luggage label/tag to each piece of your luggage.

What to Wear
For daytime excursions and relaxing on board, we recommend casual, comfortable clothing. In the evening we recommend a jacket and tie for informal dinners and black tie/tuxedo or kilt for formal dinners.


Prices are "from" per person based on twin/double share accommodation and for travel in low season. Seasonal surcharges and blackout dates may apply. Limited seat/spaces and all pricing is subject to change and availability. Rates for single or triple travellers are available on request - please enquire.

It is the passenger’s own responsibility to ensure that they comply with visa or vaccination requirements. All passengers must be in possession of a full passport with minimum of 6 months validity.
