The Royal Tour of Britain

Duration
9 Days
Prices From:
US$ 3,329

Explore what makes Britain great on this royal tour from Edinburgh to London. Focusing on royal history and key sites that have shaped the course of British history, this tour takes in many of Britain’s most beloved cities as well, culminating in a tour of Hampton Court and Windsor Castle.

This 9-day Great Britain vacation unveils some of the stories and traditions that have shaped the British Royal Family, and the nation itself. Begin in the Scottish town of Ballater, then weave your way down through England to London’s most famous royal residences.

Depart Edinburgh bound for Ballater, a small town just west of Aberdeen. You’ll stop in at St Andrews University and its famous golf course along the way. Ballater might sound like an odd place to begin a royal British tour, but it’s here – specifically, Loch Muick - that the royals have enjoyed picnics (in all weather!) all the way back to Queen Victoria. The following day, visit Balmoral Castle, where the Queen spends her summers, Crathie Church, and Crathie Graveyard. Your next destination is Braemar Castle, where forbidding turrets hide an opulent interior. Afterwards, visit the site of the Highland Games and Lochnagar Distillery.

It wouldn’t be a trip to Scotland without visiting Edinburgh, where you’ll spend one night, and tour Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile walk, and the Royal Yacht Britannia. Then go on to Rosslyn to visit the chapel made famous in The Da Vinci Code. Then drive to York, the historic capital of England’s north, where you’ll have time to explore on your own. Perhaps explore the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens, shop along The Shambles, or plunge into Nordic history at the immersive Jorvik Viking Centre. Don’t however devote your free time to York Minster and Tower. You’ll be visiting those with the group tomorrow, followed by more time to explore.

Find your inner bard (or at least, your inner literary buff) at Straford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare and one of England’s prettiest towns. Then go on to nearby Oxford, where you’ll enjoy a tour of the famous colleges, where the Royals studied.

Your trip ends of course in London, where your included itinerary will focus on London’s most famous royal residences. Take tours of Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace, seeing other key royal sites as you explore the city. Visit the Princess Diana Fountain and the Albert memorial, before dinner at Goring, a favourite restaurant of the royals. Your final day takes you west of the city to Windsor Castle, and Hampton Court Palace, historic residence of Henry VIII. Disembark in the city, where you can easily extend your visit if you wish. They do, after all, still say s/he who is tired of London is tired of life.
