Secrets of Puglia: Naples to Naples

Duration
8 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,522

Embark on a week-long exploration of Italy’s “heel.” On this escorted tour, you’ll discover good food, wine, and history as you venture to towns like Andria, Lecce, and Bari. Enjoy boutique accommodations, tour vineyards and bakeries, and discover the stunning sights and flavours of Southern Italy.

This 8-day Italian vacation takes you through Puglia along the Adriatic. It features boutique accommodations, escorted tours, and is a lovely vacation through a less-visited area of Italy that’s especially attractive to foodies.

Join your fellow travellers in Naples and board the mini-coach to begin your journey through Puglia, the “heel of the boot” in Italy’s southeast. First stop is Andria, the city known for its wine and olive production, where the imposing Castel del Monte commands your attention. You’ll embark on a food tour that’ll show you how mozzarella and burrata are made, before you get to taste both for yourself. You’ll continue to the town of Martina Franca, which will be your base for the next few days.

One day you’ll be dazzled by unique architecture as you head to the UNESCO-listed Alberobello, a town defined by the white-washed buildings with conical roofs, known as trulli. A walking tour will take you up close to these marvellous relics before you head to Locorotondo to enjoy a wine tasting at a local vineyard. The next day, explore the medieval streets of Altamura before enjoying a bread tasting at a bakery to appreciate the town’s defining attraction, the Pane di Altamura. Continue to Matera to see the Sassi, a historical centre comprised of cave dwellings that have been home to people for thousands of years. Although they’re no longer safe to live in, they do house museums and are invaluable historical attractions.

Leave Martina Franca behind and continue down the coastline to the seaside town of Monopoli, where you’ll explore the old town and harbour on foot. Continue to the white-washed town of Ostuni, known as the White City, with its stunning Ostuni Cathedral, which combines Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine architectural styles. Here, you’ll enjoy a cooking class and lunch at a masseria before heading to Lecce, the baroque town that’ll be your base for a couple days. A morning tour will introduce you to Lecce’s beautiful architecture as you wind through alleyways and pass sandstone buildings. That afternoon, head to the nearby fishing port of Gallipoli to tour an underground olive museum and see the churches and fountains of the coastal town.

On the final few days of your tour, you’ll head for Bari, stopping at Polignano a Mare, the Pearl of the Adriatic, along the way. Discover the town’s white-pebble beaches, Roman bridge, and rocky coastline on a walking tour, before reaching Bari, where you’ll discover the street food scene and visit culinary hotspots on a guided tour. While based in Bari, spend a day heading to the hilltop town of Minervino Murge, where you’ll visit a basket making workshop and tour a private wine cellar. That evening, enjoy a farewell dinner among new friends as you feast on food and wine and enjoy a folk dance performance.

On your final day, you’ll head back towards Naples, but not before stopping at Margherita di Saovia, the largest natural saltworks in Europe. In Naples, you’ll end your tour and continue to your next destination.
