Shannon Princess: Classic Inland Ireland Barge Cruise

Cruise from Dublin and sail through the lush green landscapes of Ireland. Experience events and places that are typically “Irish” such as a haunted castle, an artisan crafts village, a whisky distillery and enjoy visits to local pubs and hear authentic Irish music.

Board the Shannon Princess in Dublin and immediately be immersed in the Irish way of life. You will be met by the captain and his crew and offered a choice of champagne, black velvets or Irish coffees. 

Your cruise begins the next morning. Sail to the Inner Lakes of Lough Ree with its 365 islands and then head north to the town of Athlone in central Ireland. Here visit the Kilbeggan Whisky Distillery, the world’s oldest distillery. Also visit Ballinahown, an artisan crafts village. Spend overnight moored in Athlone. 

Next day, sail through Athlone Lock and turn south to Clonmacnoise where you will visit the ruins of a famed 6th Century university.  Then on to Shannonbridge where you stop for overnight and a visit to Leap Castle reputed to be haunted. Have a tour of the castle, meet the unusual owner who will relate the history of the place and be regaled by traditional Irish music. In the evening, join the captain and spend some time in Kileen’s Pub for some Irish music and meet the locals.

The following morning, travel through the Meelick Lock onto the idyllic Lough Derg, the second largest lake in Ireland. Moor at Terryglass Harbour.  Here visit Birr Castle and its magnificent gardens and fascinating science centre with its historic Great Telescope.  

Start the next day with a visit to Portumna Castle on the shores of Lough Derg with its walled gardens. Sail on to Galway City, well known for its university. Enjoy time at crystal, crafts and linen workshops before having lunch at a traditional Guinness and Oyster pub. Later sail across beautiful Lough Derg arriving at Mountshannon, an attractive lakeside village. 

The next morning, sail south on Lough Derg to Killaloe of Irish historical royal fame. After lunch, visit an interesting project at Craggaunowen Castle which will bring insight into the Bronze Age and Celtic cultural life. Then finally, visit an Irish hand weaving workshop. This evening enjoy your final night on board with the captain’s farewell cocktails and dinner.

Sail back the following day to Dublin where you disembark after 6 nights of
wonderful Irish hospitality.

Day 1


Please make your own way to the tour departure point at the Brooks Hotel (Dublin) by 2:30pm today. Around 3pm you will be met at the hotel and transferred to Shannon Princess moored in Glasson. Your Captain and his crew welcome you on board with champagne, Black Velvets or Irish Coffees. Time for a stroll before your first dinner on board.

Day 2

Glasson to Athlone

This morning you begin your cruise around the beautiful "Inner Lakes" of Lough Ree and then continue north as you explore some of the 365 islands on the lake. You then circle back to the River Shannon and onto your mooring in Athlone Town. After lunch you visit the Kilbeggan Whiskey Distillery, dating from 1757 and the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world. On the return journey there is time for a visit to Ballinahown, an artisan craft-suite village. Dinner on board.

Day 3

Athlone to Shannonbridge

Today you negotiate Athlone Lock and head south through Europe's richest example of "Callow" landscape. You moor at Clonmacnoise ruins, a famed 6th century university and an early monastic settlement. Following a tour, we cruise on to our mooring at Shannonbridge. Then, after lunch you visit Leap Castle, reputed to be Ireland's most haunted house. You will be given a personal tour by the eccentric owner Sean Ryan, who, with traditional Irish musicians, will relate to you the fascinating history of the castle and its part in founding the American Constitution. After dinner on board, join the captain for a pint in Killeen's pub for some Irish music and an evening with the locals.

Day 4

Shannonbridge to Terryglass

This morning, you cruise a very pretty stretch of the River Shannon through Meelick lock, pausing as Portumna swing-bridge is opened to allow you passage onto idyllic Lough Dergand, then moor at Terryglass Harbour. This afternoon you visit Birr Castle, still resided in by the Earl of Rosse and family, to see the magnificent gardens, the fascinating Science Centre and admire the historic Great Telescope. Dinner on board.

Day 5

Terryglass to Mountshannon

Today, your tour is firstly, to the walled gardens of Portumna Castle, then on to Galway City, a lively University City and cultural centre for Irish-speaking regions in Western Ireland. Visit the Galway crystal, craft and linen shops and enjoy lunch at a traditional Guinness & oyster pub. You return to Shannon Princess and set sail across beautiful Lough Derg, passing Forrest Park and ancient mountains as you head for Mountshannon -- a lovely lakeside village perched above the Lough. Dinner on board.

Day 6

Mountshannon to Killaloe

Today you set sail across south Lough Derg rejoining the River Shannon to moor at Killaloe, once home to the court of the greatest High King of Ireland, Brian Boru. After exploring this elegant little town you lunch on board, then set off to tour a unique project located in the grounds of Craggaunowen Castle, designed to bring Bronze Age and Celtic culture to life, before finally visiting a traditional Irish hand-weaving workshop. 'Salinte' cocktail reception and Captain's Farewell Dinner on board.

After breakfast, disembark Shannon Princess and transfer to Dublin. You will be dropped off by 12 noon at your choice of location in Dublin centre, or at Dublin airport.
