Day 2

Excursion to Etna Sud and Taormina

This morning you will be picked up from your hotel and depart for Mount Etna: the highest active volcano in Europe (3345 mt). The bus will bring you up to the "Rifugio Sapienza" at 1800 mt. You will have a chance to visit the Silvestri Craters. The path is very easy (just one km walking and 50 meters difference in height), but we encourage you to pay attention anyway (due to the sandy soil, possible snow, wind and the crowds). On the way, you can admire wonderful fauna and flora and spectaculars moony landscapes. The special ambient created during the centuries under nature, culture and history is inimitable all over the world. As an alternative you can take the cable car or bus up to 2800 mt. (optional aprox. 60 Euro per person to pay on the spot). Your day continues on to Taormina: a pretty and romantic town on the Mount Tauro (204 mt). Here you will have time to visit the famous Greek Theatre with a splendid view of the Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea, or to do shopping and to stroll through the picturesque lanes of the city centre. While it is unashamedly touristy and has a main street lined with high-end designer shops, the town remains an achingly beautiful spot with gorgeous medieval churches, a stunning Greek theatre and sweeping views over the Gulf of Naxos and Mt Etna.

Duration10 Hours
Day 3

Palermo - Marsala, Mozia and Trapani Salt Flats

This morning you will be picked up from your hotel and depart for Marsala for a wine tasting in a famous winery. The first English man on the scene was John Woodhouse, who stumbled across the local wine in 1773. He liked it and thought that it might be popular in his native country. If the wine was to survive the long ocean voyage, however, it would need to be fortified with the addition of alcohol - thus was born Marsala wine. Continue to visit Mozia a small island in front of Marsala, reachable by boat. Marsala's origins are tied up with those of an unusual archaeological site nearby, the little island of Mozia, also known as San Pantaleo. Mozia was an important colonial stronghold of Carthage in north Africa, itself an early colony of the Phoenician ('Punic') people. We will then continue to Trapani to visit the salt lakes with their beautiful Windmills. Trapani boasts some of Europe's oldest salt marshes, and is still home to some of the windmills once used to drain water from the basins (containing ponds). Drawing salt from water remains a slow process, similar to desalination, something talked about more and more with the serious water supply problems confronting Sicily. The evaporation procedure utilises the flat marshlands of Trapani's coast and the long, dry Sicilian summers.

Day 4

Excursion to Agrigento

This morning you will be picked up from your hotel for an excursion to Agrigento. The Province of Agrigento stretches out amidst ancient ruins and Baroque architecture, as well as sparkling beaches, marvelous islands, crystal-clear waters and ocean beds buzzing with life. Here you will get a chance to visit of the Magnificent Valley of the Temples (an UNESCO World Heritage Site), erected by the Greeks in the course of the 5th century BC. A nice walk through the Valley will show you the Temple of Juno, the Temple of Concord, the Temple of Hercules, and so on... There will be free time for lunch (own account). The gastronomy of Agrigento is rich in colors and flavors, and is an irresistible invitation for the eyes and taste buds. Both land and sea are the two components of local food and beverages. As for fish-based courses: try the sole, stuffed sardine and the exquisite sea bream in meat broth.
