MODERATE | SELF-DRIVE: Get off the beaten track with a 10-day self-drive program through Southern France. See the world-renowned wine city of Bordeaux. Continue to the famous pilgrimage town of Lourdes. Then, in Carcassonne, discover a stunning medieval walled city before ending your program in Montpellier, the medieval city known for its lively atmosphere and proximity to the Mediterranean sea.

This 10-day French self-drive takes you to Bordeaux, Lourdes, Carcassonne, and Montpellier. It features moderate and first-class accommodations, a car rental, and independent touring that lets you travel at your own pace.

Your journey begins in Bordeaux, the gastronomic centre famous for its wine regions and celebrated eateries. You’ll pick up your rental car and have several days to explore the city and the surrounding wine regions. One day, explore the city itself with visits to the former royal palace Place de la Bourse, the Gothic Bordeaux Cathedral, and the greenspaces and trendy shops along the Garonne River. Cap off the day at La Cite du Vine for an immersive wine experience. The next day, venture out of town to explore a wine region, whether St. Emilion and Pomerol, which are known for their Merlot and Cabernet, or Medoc with its Cabernet Sauvignon. You can also head to the Bay of Arcachon to see the Dunes of Pilat and feast on fresh oysters.

Drive south and detour into French Basque Country on your way to the holy city of Lourdes. This famous pilgrimage site draws over 5 million pilgrims each year who come to be blessed at the basilica or find healing in the baths and holy waters. Join a candlelight procession, see mass at the sacred cathedral, or simply enjoy the stunning architecture. From Lourdes, continue on to Carcassonne, stopping in Toulouse along the way if you wish. Carcassonne is France’s most famous medieval walled city. Marvel at the castle walls and parapets that surround the entire medieval town. Visit the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire or head to nearby Perpignan to explore medieval palaces along the Mediterranean.

The final leg of your journey takes you along the coast to Montpellier. You can stop at Narbonne along the way to see the Roman ruins and stunning promenades along the Canal du Robine. In Montpellier, you can explore the charming central squares of this university town, visit the Place Royale du Peyrou, or take advantage of the sunny beaches along the Mediterranean.

At the end of your stay, drop off your rental car and head to the train station or airport to connect to your next destination.
