Splendid Amalfi Coast: Rome, Sorrento & Amalfi

Duration
9 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,661

Discover the best of Italy on this semi-escorted tour through the country’s south. Take advantage of the Hop-On Hop-Off bus in Rome to explore the Eternal City before touring the Vatican. Then head south along the Amalfi Coast to tour Naples, Pompeii, Capri, and Anacapri. End your vacation with leisure time in Amalfi to discover the beauty of this coastal region.

This 9-day Italian vacation takes you along the Amalfi Coast, travelling from Rome to Naples, Sorrento, and the village of Amalfi.

Your trip to Italy begins in Rome, the nation’s capital and the heart of the ancient Roman Empire. You’ll quickly be dazzled by the wonders of the Eternal City. On your first day, take advantage of the Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour to explore landmarks like the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, and the Colosseum in between meals of incredible Italian cooking. Spend the next day exploring the Vatican Museums, beating the crowds with an early entrance pass. Skip the line and explore the galleries of the museum, including the marvellous Raphael Rooms, before reaching the Sistine Chapel, where you can gaze upon Michelangelo’s heavenly frescoes. Continue to St. Peter’s Basilica to see the Pieta and experience the overwhelming grandeur of the world’s largest church.

From Rome, head south and reach Naples, the treasure of the Amalfi Coast and the birthplace of Neapolitan culture. Take a walking tour of the old town to see landmarks like the Piazza del Plebiscito and the Royal Palace before trying out some unforgettable Neapolitan dishes. Hint: try the pizza, as there’s no better place to have this famous dish than in the city that invented it. Continue from Naples to nearby Pompeii to explore an ancient city that was engulfed by volcanic ash during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. That evening, continue to Sorrento, the western gateway to the Amalfi Coast and one of the most popular resort towns in Southern Italy. Tourists have flocked to the town since the 19th century and famous visitors like Lord Byron only added to the town’s romantic appeal. While based in Sorrento, you’ll take a day to explore the island of Capri and its most popular towns, Capri and Anacapri. Board the ferry and journey to the peaceful island, where you’ll stroll through lush gardens and see the famous Blue Grotto, gazing into the impossibly-blue depths of the water. Return to Sorrento and continue to Amalfi.

Amalfi is small and beautiful, perched on the steep cliffs of the coastline that bears its name. Despite its size, the town was a powerhouse during the Middle Ages. Unfortunately, many of its historical buildings were destroyed during an earthquake in the 14th century. Of the few that remain, you’ll want to explore the Sant’Andrea Cathedral, with its unique Arab and Byzantine style. In addition to exploring the city centre, stroll along the breathtaking cliffs, cool off with a dip in the Mediterranean, and visit the nearby villages of Ravello and Positano. After a couple days in Amalfi, return to Rome, passing once again through Pompeii along the way. In Rome, you’ll connect to the airport or train station to continue your onward journey.
