Cruise through Central Europe, the Balkans, Lake Balaton, the Sava & the Danube

11 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,696

See the best of the Balkans on this round-trip Europe cruise from Budapest. Discover the unique traditions and delights of Croatia, Serbia, and Bosnia before returning to the Paris of the East.

Please see LEFT BAR for ship details and other cruise info.

This 11-day cruise is the ultimate way to see the Balkans in style. Cast off from the delightful village of Sisak (transfer from Budapest included), and sail first along the Sava River, before meeting up with the famous Danube for your onward cruise back to Budapest.

The centre of Hungarian culture for centuries, Budapest is much more than just your arrival and departure point, so consider booking an extra few days before or after your cruise to enjoy all it has to offer. Transfer by coach to Lake Balaton, a holiday favourite for Hungarians, then overnight in the health resort of Balatonfured. The following day, meet up with the MS Victor Hugo for your cruise, visiting the baroque towns of Varazdin and Sisak along the way.

From Sisak, you’ll go ashore again for an excursion to Zagreb, Croatia’s capital. Something of a ‘hidden treat’ compared to other European capitals, Zagreb weathered the civil war of the 90s to come out on top as a delightful city destination packed with medieval architecture, parks, cultural attractions, and a resolutely Croatian approach to good living. Upon returning to Sisak, sail on to Jasenovac, the gateway to Lonjsko Polje Nature Park. Bird watchers take note, this may be the highlight of your trip. Enjoy lunch at a local Slavonian farm before an evening of entertainment aboard ship. The following day, visit the Brod Citadel, built to protect the Austro-Hungarian Empire from Turkish invaders. You’ll also see more of the Slavonian countryside as you meet local villagers and sample the local food.

The Sava marks the border between Croatia and Bosnia, and your next port offers you a glimpse of the other side. Explore Brcko in Bosnia, where modern construction rises alongside traditional architecture scarred by war. Evening entertainment introduces you to the folk music and traditions of Bosnia.

Cross the border with an excursion across the Vojvodina region of northern Serbia. Explore the unique blend of Byzantine and Baroque influence in Serbian art and architecture, and take an evening walk through Sremska Mitrovica. Then it’s on to Belgrade, the capital of Serbia (and formerly of Yugoslavia), where the Danube and Sava rivers meet. Just like the rivers, the cultures of Slavic, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian Europe come together here, creating one of Europe’s most intriguing cities.

Sail north to Novi Sad, a diverse medieval city in Vojvodina, before visiting the Djakovo Stud Farm. Overnight back in Croatia, in the town of Osijek, your gateway to Kopacki Rit Nature Park. Finally, your cruise returns to Budapest for a gala evening farewell. If you didn’t devote some extra time to the Hungarian capital before your trip, we highly recommend doing so now, to bring your Balkan holiday to an unforgettable end.
