This 10-day Italian self-drive vacation takes you on a road trip around Tuscany. It features first-class accommodations, self-guided touring, and is a great way to see Italy at your own pace.

Your journey begins in Florence in the heart of Tuscany, where you’ll pick up your rental car and have a day at leisure to enjoy some of the city’s many pleasures. Head to the top of the city’s famous Duomo to enjoy views over the city’s tilled rooftops or visit the dell ’Accademia to see Michelangelo’s famous statue of David. Once you’ve had a taste of Florence, hit the road and head for Lucca. If you have time, stop at Montecatini Terme along the way to tour its gardens and spas. Once you reach Lucca, you’ll have the evening to get to know this city of medieval churches and fortified walls. Based on Lucca, you’ll have a day to explore nearby centres. Drive to Pisa to see the famous Leaning Tower and the Campo dei Miracoli, Square of Miracles, or park in La Spezia and tour the colourful cliffside villages of Cinque Terre.

Leave Lucca behind and head to the medieval city of Siena, known for its stunning Gothic cathedral and the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo. Swing by San Gimignano and Volterra to continue your exploration of medieval architecture. Based in Siena, you’ll have a day to continue exploring at your leisure. Continue on to Montepulciano, winding through the scenic Val d’Orcia to admire the picturesque rolling hills, green valleys, and sprawling vineyards of Tuscany. Based in Montepulciano, you’ll have two days at leisure to do as you wish. You can head into the heart of Tuscan wine country near Pienza and Montalcino to sample Italian vintages or delve into the history of extra virgin olive oil, white truffles, or saffron. If you want to be more active, head to the archeological park of Mt. Cetona and explore the hilltop town of Cortona.

At the end of your stay in Montepulciano, you’ll drive back to Florence and drop off your rental car to end your journey.

Florence

Enjoy the day at leisure exploring Florence visiting some of its top attractions including the Duomo (Florence Cathedral), Ponte Vecchio or stroll through the main square of Piazza Della Signoria. Or, perhaps take a tour of the Accademia Gallery to see the famous David.

Day 3

Florence to Lucca

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and begin your Tuscan journey!  Head towards Lucca, the historical ancient city located 78km / 49 miles west of Florence.  The 'city of churches' can best been visited by walking along the medieval walls that surround the historical centre.  Enroute to Lucca, perhaps make a stop in Montecatini Terme, known for its splendid gardens and spas.  Spend the remainder of the day exploring the city.

Day 4

Lucca

In the morning, drive to Pisa, only 20kms / 12 miles from Lucca. Head to the Square of Miracles (Campo dei Miracoli) and Leaning Tower, located along the north western edge along the city's fortified wall.  The Leaning Tower is 55 meters high and is inclined 5° southward.  Be sure to buy tickets in advance if you want to climb up the 294 steps! Or, perhaps spend the day exploring Cinque Terre. Only an hour drive from Lucca, park your vehicle in La Spezia and explore all five villages.

Day 5

Lucca to Siena

After breakfast, depart Lucca and head southeast towards the Siena, approximately 143km / 88 miles away.  Siena is a city fully of medieval treasures, including its Gothic cathedral overlooking the main square, Piazza Del Campo or 'il Campo', known for its distinct shell shape and home to the palio horse race.  Enroute, make a stop in San Gimignano and Volterra for a glimpses of medieval towers and Etruscan origins.  If time permits, visit other lesser known hilltop towns such as Colle di Val d'Elsa and Monterggioni.

Siena to Montepulciano

Say good-bye to Siena and head further south towards Montepulciano.  Take the scenic route through Val d'Orcia and discover the stunning beauty of the region. The Val d'Orcia area boasts the quintessential Tuscan landscape of rolling hills, rich green valleys and vineyards from the wines of Brunello.This area of Tuscany boasts of endless rolling hills covered with grain or sunflowers, a rich green valley which encompasses the Orcia river, from which the zone derives its name, and don’t forget the vineyards for the famous Brunello wines.

Montepulciano to Florence
