Villages of Bucovina & Maramures Hiking in Romania

Discover on this hiking tour of Romania’s interior not only the attractive countryside of rural Romania but also the interesting lifestyles and unusual churches and monasteries of the region. Stay in guest houses run by the locals. A truly off the beaten track vacation.

After meeting your group at Bucharest railway station, board the overnight train to the Bucovina region. On arrival the next morning, transfer to your hosts’ home for breakfast and later, start your walking vacation with a stroll through the local village. You will meet the Hutsules people, an indigenous long established ethnic group who are famous for the art of egg painting. Also see the Moldavia monasteries famous for their exterior frescoes. Overnight with your hosts.

The next morning brings a hike through woods and fields to the Sucevia Monastery, an Eastern Orthodox convent dating back to 1585 with its vast fresco of great artistic value. Stay overnight in Sucevia.

The next day, hike again through forests and over hills to the village of Manastirea Humorului and become acquainted with the local pastoral life with its sheep herds and horse carts. Stay overnight in Manastirea Humorului.

Before departing, see the Voronets Monastery with its frescoes, then travel by road to Maramures with its deep forests and wooden churches. This area carefully preserves its culture, traditions and lifestyles. Overnight here.

Hike the next day from one village to another. Depending on the weather you will visit the Barsana Monastery which is a masterpiece of wooden Maramures architecture. Ovwernight again in Maramures.

More hiking the next morning through mountainous pastures, lakes and forests. You will see a wooden church with a rich interior of frescoes. Overnight in Maramures.

Travel overland to Sapanta and visit the “Happy Cemetery” an open-air museum with its colourful tombstones. Then continue to the city of Sighetu Marmatiei and view its Communism Victims Memorial. From here, you will catch an overnight train back to Bucharest.

Day 1

Reception in Bucharest

Reception is at Bucharest train station. Depending on your arrival time you may have time to visit Bucharest. Night train for Bucovina at 9:00 PM (first-class sleeping wagon, 2 beds or 4 beds per cabin).

Day 2

Local craft

A short transfer will take you to your hosts where you will have breakfast. After breakfast you will stroll in a typical village. After a few hours of walking you will meet Hutsules people; these inhabitants (with uncertain roots and history) will make you discover their art: eggs painting. You will also discover today one of the major components of the unique Bucovina monasteries set, the Moldovita painted monastery. These monasteries are famous due to the exterior frescoes. Moldovita constitutes a perfect introduction to feel the charm of the Moldavian monasteries. Here, frescoes where yellow and orange dominate amaze the visitor. (Approximately 4 hours of walking), 13 km, +350m, -300m). Overnight in Moldovita.

Day 3

Sucevita and its monastery

A hike through woods and fields will lead you to an unexpected rural world which is still very alive. You will arrive to the Sucevita monastery from the fields, which will offer you a striking sight: the nature seems to protect the monastery like a jewel! The perfection of each detail on such a vast fresco is amazing. (Approximately 4-5 hours of walking, 12 km, +400m, -300m). Overnight in Sucevita.

Day 4

Bucolic hike

Hike in the forests: you will walk through hills to arrive to the village of Manastirea Humorului. This immersion in a peasant world will enchant you; the beautiful landscape punctuated with sheep herds and horse-carts reveals a great harmony. Overnight in the village of Manastirea Humorului (Approximately 5 hours of walking, 14 km, +650m, -600).

Day 5

Transfer to Maramure

Depending on the weather, you will discover the Voronet monastery and the brilliant blue of its frescoes. Transfer to Maramure (Approximately 4h30 transfer). You will visit the oldest wooden church of Maramure, and then will hike to your host, in the nearby village. Immerse yourself in the Maramures atmosphere with its deep forests, its long-shaped villages with sculptured portals and with its wooden churches (Approximately 2.5 hours of walking, 8 km, +300m, -250).

Day 6

Traditional way of life

Today you will discover Maramure between fields and forests. In every season the country is animated by the field's works. Hike from a village to another. Depending on the weather you will visit the Barsana monastery which is a masterpiece of the wooden Maramure architecture. (Approximately 4 hours of walking, 13 km, -400). Possible longer walk depending of the group level.

Day 7

Hike in mountains

Today you go to a remote region of Maramure, and hike between high mountain pastures, mountain lakes, and forests. You will make a last visit in one of the most impressive wooden churches. This church has one of the richest interior frescoes. (Approximately 6 hours of walking, 18 km, +400m, -700).

Day 8

Happy Cemetery

Private transfer to Sapanta to discover the incredible "Happy Cemetery". Then it is time to visit the city of Sighetu Marmatiei and its "Communism Victims Memorial" created in the prison where the main opponents of the regime were detained (without trial). Depart at 5:40 pm, overnight in the train to Bucharest (sleeping wagon, 2 beds or 4 beds per cabin).

Day 9

Depart Bucharest

You have an early arrival in Bucharest (8:00AM) when your trip ends.
