Visiting the Great Cathedrals River Cruise

Duration
6 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,699

A European cruise with a difference, this trip down the Rhine takes in some of Europe’s greatest cathedrals, in addition to letting you visit some of the most picturesque cities in France and Germany.

Please see LEFT BAR for ship details and other cruise info.

This 6-day cruise connects some of the most marvelous cathedrals in Europe, embarking in Strasbourg, then sailing down the Rhine to Cologne, the home of Germany’s most magnificent cathedral.

Check into your 5-star cabin and begin your trip with a guided tour of Strasbourg and its cathedral. With its astronomical clock, Strasbourg’s is considered one of the finest late Gothic cathedrals in the world. You’ll also visit the Musee de l’OEuvre Notre-Dame, which features a wide range of related artefacts including the original plans.

Sail to the comparatively small German town of Speyer, whose 11th century cathedral is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. In the afternoon, take an excursion to Heidelberg, one of Germany’s great university towns with picture-perfect red sandstone architecture. Rejoin the boat in Worms, where you’ll take a guided tour the following morning. The cathedral here is distinctive for its High Romanesque architecture, which masks a modest interior. It’s in stark contrast to the complex layers of your next destination, Mainz Cathedral. Add-ons over centuries have created a rich tapestry of architectural styles and combinations on this Romanesque marvel.

Your final stop is Cologne, home to Germany’s most famous cathedral, which overlooks the Rhine with two magnificent spires. The building also houses a museum, showcasing a variety of art, as well as the history of Eu de Cologne, which was of course born here. Return to the boat for a gala farewell dinner, with breakfast on board before you depart.

Day 2

Strasbourg to Speyer

Full board on board. In the morning, we'll set off on a guided tour of Strasbourg and its cathedral. Famous for its single spire and astronomical clock, this cathedral is widely considered among the finest examples of late Gothic architecture. The famous west front is decorated with thousands of figures, and its spire measures over 466 feet. The cathedral is built out of red sandstone from the nearby Vosges Mountains, which gives it its characteristic pink hue. We'll also visit the nearby Musée de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame, famous for its collection representing seven centuries of sculptures, glass windows, and architectural artefacts, as well as the building plans for the Strasbourg Cathedral and other great churches in the region. Afterwards, we'll return on board and spend the afternoon cruising. Don't miss the on board lecture about the sites we'll be visiting. After dinner, join us for an evening of entertainment on board. We'll arrive in Speyer during the evening.

Speyer to Mannheim to Worms

Full board on board. This morning, we'll set out on a guided tour on foot of Speyer and its cathedral. Dominated by its red sandstone castle perched above, the city has preserved its unequalled charm. We'll return on board in Worms and enjoy dinner and an evening of dancing in the lounge.
