West Coast Explorer: Small Group: Dublin to Dublin
- Duration
- 5 Days
- Prices From:
- US$ 922
Experience some of Ireland’s most beautiful and dramatic landscapes including the breathtaking Connemara National Park, the country’s wildest region. Enjoy a drive along the Atlantic Coast visiting the remarkable Cliffs of Moher plus spend time in small but attractive ancient towns.
This small group experience (maximum 16 participants) gets you off the beaten track so you get a real feel for the country. Our guides are hand-picked for their pride and passion for their country. Transportation is in modern Mercedes Benz mini-coaches and accommodation is in 3 star country hotels.
Travel westward from Dublin through the heart of Ireland via Kildare and Offaly. En route, stop at Locke’s Distillery, the oldest legal distillery in the world founded in 1757. Here you will have the opportunity to sample some of the whiskey produced here. Continue to Shannonbridge where you will enjoy a stop at a traditional pub before eventually arriving at Galway City, a bustling town with a lively nightlife, charming pedestrian streets and numerous pubs and cafes for a 2 night stay.
The next morning, begin your west coast explorations, first visiting Connemara, the land of mountains, rivers, lakes and small villages where the Gaelic language is still widely spoken. This area is the wildest and most remote part of the country. Travel through the wild mountainous Connemara National Park with its diverse flora and fauna. Visit Maam Valley with its ancient woods and mountain backdrop and also visit the village of Cong situated on an island. Stop at Cong Abbey with its interesting early Irish architecture dating back to the 12th Century. You will then visit an unusual museum, the Quiet Man Museum which depicts aspects of the 1951 movie of the name filmed here starring John Wayne. Another highlight will be Kylemore Abbey, a beautiful functioning monastery located on the grounds of Kylemore Castle. Other ports of call are attractive ancient Clifden, the largest town in Connemara and the Twelve Bens, a series of steep sided mountain peaks. The day will end with an 11 kilometre/7 mile drive on the Sky Road which takes in wonderful coastal scenery. Return later to Galway City.
The following day, leave Galway and travel to the wild and rocky Burren region, a beautiful land of limestone pavements, barren hillsides, rare flora and early settlements. Spend most of the morning exploring this unique area. Later head to Kilfenora for lunch after which discover the exceptional Cliffs of Moher, a coastal area offering dramatic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Then afterwards, it is time to complete your journey heading back to Dublin.

Connemara
Galway sits on the edge of Connemara and that is the area you explore today. Travel inland through the Maam Valley to the village of Cong on the shore of Lough Corrib - where the classic film "The Quiet Man" was made. There will be time for a visit to Cong Abbey or the Quiet Man Museum. You continue through the heart of Connemara for a visit to the beautiful house and grounds at Kylemore Abbey. Further round the circuit you will see the Connemara National Park, Clifden (the first transatlantic flight landed here), the Sky Road and the Twelve Bens of Connemara. Along the way there will be many opportunities for photos of this dramatic landscape.
