Prices From:
US$ 1,187

Pay respects to fallen soldiers and explore the history of World War I on a journey to the battlefields of France and Belgium. Journeying from Lille to Amiens and Ypres, you’ll visit the infamous battlefields of the Somme, Vimy Ridge, and Ypres and learn about your country’s involvement in WWI.

This 5-day French and Belgian vacation takes you to the battlefields of World War I. It features boutique accommodations, small group tours, and is perfect for history buffs and travellers wanting to pay their respects on a European vacation.

Your journey begins in Lille, where you’ll meet your tour group and get your bearings. First stop is the Somme, just to the northeast of Amiens. The Somme was the most infamous battle of the Western Front, raging for five months and claiming one million casualties. You’ll see preserved trenches and pay respects to fallen soldiers during visits to the Newfoundland Memorial Park at Beaumont-Hamel, Ulster Tower, and Thiepval Memorial. End the day in Amiens, which will be your base for the next two nights. The next day, explore the underground city of Naour, constructed by ANZAC soldiers during the war. Then return to Amiens to spend some time exploring this lovely city with its Gothic Cathedral and museum dedicated to Jules Verne.

Turn northeast and head to Villier-Bretonneaux, where you’ll see the Australian National War Memorial and Cemetery. Continue to Vimy, where you’ll visit the Canadian National Vimy Memorial and walk up to the beautiful limestone monument overlooking the plain. Cross the border into Belgium and reach Ypres, which was at the heart of several key battles in World War I and was completely destroyed during the war. You’ll spend a full day exploring the rebuilt Ypres and its many war monuments, from John McCrae’s Dressing Station at Essex Farm Cemetery to the Hooge Crater trenches museum. End the day at Menin Gate, where you’ll listen to Last Post ring out in the old town.

On your final day, stop off at Hill 60 and the Australian Memorial Park near Fromelles before returning to Lille to end your tour.

'Like father, like son' as they say in Ypres, except that the Albion Hotel is run by two ladies: Christiane and her daughter Ruth. Both have been welcoming visitors of Ypres since 2000, when they started the hotel.

The combination of hospitality, first class accommodation and cosiness was almost instantly a huge success amongst guests. 'I think our visitors keep coming back because they enjoy the relaxed atmosphere after a day of walking and visiting the region', says Christiane. 'If people tell us that when they enter the Albion Hotel, it is like coming home again', Ruth and I feel very proud. 'Because it is exactly that feeling that we want to share with our guests'.
