MODERATE | RAIL AND CRUISE TOUR: A wonderful trip that combines a 7-Day cruise on the mighty St. Lawrence River with journeys by rail on either side of the cruise. The ship moves into US waters to see Millionaire’s Row from up close, but the 1000-Islands and Upper Canada Village are the big highlights. Toronto, Québec City and Montréal provide the city flair, but you can also enjoy a full-day excursion to Niagara Falls.

Rail and Cruise in Eastern Canada

This 15-day trip whisks you by rail from Toronto to Kingston and then aboard a cruise as you sail the St. Lawrence River right up to the ancient walls of Quebec City. Experience Ontario and Quebec’s most spectacular sights from a unique perspective as the picturesque shorelines and ports of the 1000 Islands, Upper Canada Village, Montreal, and Trois Rivieres loom on the horizon. On land, you’ll have a chance to explore the lush Niagara Region and its roaring Niagara Falls, putting Canada’s natural beauty on full display.

Allow yourself to marvel at the heights of Toronto, Canada’s largest city, as you travel 335 metres into the sky for a panoramic view from the CN Tower. From above, you’ll see Toronto’s eclectic neighbourhoods stretch into the distance, encompassing the sandy shores of The Beaches, bustling boutiques of West Queen West, warm eateries of Chinatown, and more. Your tour package also includes a visit of Ripley’s Aquarium, where you’ll come face-to-face with jellyfish, sharks, Nemo, and more from the bottom of an underwater viewing tunnel.

Travelling around Lake Ontario will bring you to the verdant Niagara Peninsula, famous for its orchards, wineries, theatre scene, and the iconic Niagara Falls. The power of this natural world wonder will be on full display when you take a boat trip right up to the foot of the Horseshoe Falls, feeling the mist spray across your face and the roar of 28 million litres of water pounding over each second.

Boarding the St. Lawrence River Cruise in Kingston, you’ll disembark through the 1000 Islands, whose name describes the number but not beauty of this area popular with outdoors enthusiasts. History awaits you both above and below water, as the riverbed is the final resting place of many shipwrecks, which you can learn about at your leisure at the Heritage Museum in Gananoque.

While there are plenty of sights to see, take a moment to enjoy the sunshine on your face and wind in your hair as you head east on the calm waterway. Crossing the American sea border, you’ll peek at Millionaire’s Row, a strip of islands and their respective mansions purchased in the 19th and 20th century by some of America’s richest families. Step back in time at Upper Canada Village, a heritage park that brings you into the heart of the 1800s. Explore old buildings and participate in 19th-century activities as you ponder how you would have fared in rural Canada back in the day. Later, you’ll cross the Ontario-Quebec border and dock in Coteau Landing, a Quebecois village with plenty of old canal pathways to explore.

Passing through Montreal, Trois Rivieres, and Quebec City via waterway gives you a unique perspective as you disembark at each of their historic ports for short city tours that give you the essential highlights, getting you excited to return for a more in-depth exploration on your way back. These cities combine French and English history with recent cosmopolitan influences to provide unique architecture, culinary scenes, and rich artistic traditions that you won’t find elsewhere in Canada.

You’ll disembark in Quebec City, exercising your land legs as you take a tour of the ancient walled city, giving you plenty of free time to explore its cobblestone streets. Try some Quebecois cuisine, whether maple syrup-infused desserts or poutine strike your fancy. You’ll make your way back to Ontario slowly via train, stopping in Montreal for two nights to eat fresh bagels, admire colourful murals, and thrift shop to your heart’s content.

Your adventure comes to an end upon arrival at Toronto’s Union Station, where you can transfer to the airport for your flight home or continue exploring Canada’s cosmopolitan centre.
