Sunshine Coast Walking Summer Adventure

5 Days
Prices From:

MODERATE | SMALL GROUP TOURING: A wonderful summer adventure from Vancouver to the Sunshine Coast, 180 km of paradise which is only accessible by ferry, boat, or plane. Stretching from Howe Sound to Desolation Sound, hugging the Georgia Strait, it is dotted with quaint but vibrant seaside communities and offers lush wilderness areas to reconnect with nature. This trip is all about short hikes, leisurely sightseeing and checking out local breweries. Admire the picture-perfect Willingdon Beach trails or discover the rush and roar of the Skookumchuk Tidal Rapids, all the while enjoying languid long summer days.

This 5-day adventure departs from Vancouver and travels north from Howe Sound up to Desolation Sound, exploring the sunny coast of the Georgia Strait. You’ll find tranquility in seaside communities like Sechelt and Powell River, contrasting against the adventure of Skookumchuck Tidal Rapids and the many hiking paths of the Sunshine Coast Trail. This trip includes a mix of private and small group tours.

Your summer adventure begins in Vancouver, where you’ll meet for a quick briefing then be on your way to the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal. Enjoy those ocean views on your 1.5-hour water transfer, where you’ll dock in Langdale for lunch and a short drive to the peaceful village of Sechelt. After a guided walk around town, you’ll have free time for the rest of the evening, giving you the option to bask in the final rays of the day at sunset and find a cozy spot for dinner. After a good night’s sleep, have a calm breakfast at one of the many cozy cafes around town and meet your group as you set off for a scenic coastal drive towards your next stop on the list. But not so fast, as you’ll stop for several photo ops along the way to take in breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and waters below.

After a 1-hour cruise from Earl’s Cove Terminal to Saltery Bay and a short drive along the Strait, you’ll arrive in the historic town of Powell River. As the Sunshine Coast’s largest community, Powell River has a strong art and cultural scene, making it an essential stop in combination with its stunning landscape and plethora of outdoor activities. After lunch, you’ll explore town with your leader, ending up on the picturesque Willingdon Beach Trail. You can frolic around in the sand, or freshen up at your hotel as you head off to a beer-tasting experience at a local brewery with your fellow globetrotters, perhaps ending the night off with some new friends. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep, as the next morning will begin early.

Grab breakfast and catch the sunrise if you’re an early riser, or show up just on time at 8am if that’s more your style as you meet the group for a 3-hour hike along the Sunshine Coast Trail. You’ll traverse lush rainforests and feel the power of several ancient waterfalls as you and your group take on a small section of one of Canada’s longest hut-to-hut trails. Don’t forget to bring a picnic with you, allowing you to enjoy an open-air lunch in an unforgettable verdant setting. After returning to Powell River, you’ll have free time to browse indie boutiques, peruse art galleries, visit a distillery, or kayak on the Georgia Strait.

After your last breakfast before the road, you’ll be on your way by 9am in a private vehicle back to the ferry. Switch things up this time with a detour to Skookumchuck Tidal Rapids for a two-hour guided hike through the rainforest, where if you're lucky enough, you’ll be able to spot the tides changing along with the rapids. It only happens twice per day, so hope for the best and perhaps you’ll even be able to spot a rare surfer on the water, riding out a single wave. You’ll have time to check out a local eatery before leaving for the town of Gibsons, so fuel up for your last full day of adventure. Explore the way you like in Gibsons, whether it’s learning some Indigenous and maritime history at the local museum or taking a stroll up Soames Hill for a sweeping harbour view, both of which can be washed down with a drink at a local brewery. Don’t spoil your appetite though, as Gibsons has no shortage of freshly caught Pacific salmon served up at its establishments.

Snap your final photos of the harbour as you depart at 11am for Langdale for the return ferry, breathing in the fresh air that blows across the Strait one last time. Prepare to be back on the city streets of Vancouver where the tour comes to an end in Granville Square by 4pm, just in time for a drink or to make dinner reservations. Perhaps you’ll want to stay a few more days to explore with your newfound travel buddies, or make your way back to the airport if you’re eager to share all your memories with loved ones back home!
