Malawi is a landlocked country bordered by Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique and is part of the Great Rift Valley which stretches from north to south to be experienced on a Malawi vacation. The former name of Malawi was Nyasaland. The capital is Lilongwe and the commercial centre is Blantyre. Lake Malawi bordering the east of the country occupies almost one-third of Malawi in the area and is one of the deepest lakes in the world.

Our Malawi Tours

Malawi has a large diversity of beautiful landscapes to enjoy on a Mallawi vacation. The highest peaks rise to 3000 metres/10,000feet. It is generally a green, lush country, with plateaus, highlands, forests, mountains, plains, escarpments and dramatic river valleys. The variety of scenery is a major attraction to visitors on a Malawi vacation and many of the highland areas and forest reserves have good accommodation options.

Malawi is blessed with a rich diversity of flora and fauna and has nine National Parks or Wildlife Reserves that can be added to a Malawi vacation. While it may not have quite the number of large animals as some of its better-known neighbours, it makes up for this in other ways. Malawi provides intensive and exclusive wildlife viewing in unspoilt areas of genuine wilderness.

Wildlife Reserves

Majete Wildlife Reserve, 70 kilometres/45 miles from Blantyre, is a unique conservation and tourist destination. It is an amazing success story of recovery and restoration, and the continued protection of endangered species has led Majete to become one of the most popular reserves in Malawi. The “Big Five” can also be viewed here.

Ntchisi Forest Reserve has an abundance of birdlife and is one of the few areas in Malawi with rainforest. Here one can view monkeys, baboons and hyenas.

Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve is quite vast and consists of rugged terrain crossed by a number of rivers which flow down the edge of an escarpment on their way to Lake Malawi. It is a true wilderness which particularly attracts those who wish to enjoy a walking safari, fishing and climbing. The range of mammals is as good as anywhere in Malawi although the environment can make viewing difficult. Birdlife is also prolific with 130 recorded species.

National Parks

Liwonde is perhaps the most popular of all the game parks offering a Malawi safari. It is about 160 kilometres/100 miles north of Blantyre. Wildlife here includes a large number of elephants and the river attracts countless hippos and crocodiles. Antelope include kudu, sable and bushbuck. There are leopards and hyenas and the occasional visiting lion. Birdlife is exceptionally varied.

Kasungu National Park has a wide variety of wildlife including elephants, antelopes, leopards, hyenas and jackals.

Located in Southern Malawi, just 2 hours from Blantyre, the Zomba Plateau is covered in a dense forest of Cedar, Pine and Cypress trees and is dotted with waterfalls and streams. A hike to the top of the plateau is a popular tourist activity for visitors to the city of Zomba located at the base of the plateau. The views from the top of the plateau are absolutely magnificent.

A Malawi safari is about memorable experiences in beautiful surroundings with none of the vehicle convoys characteristic of some African game parks. Visitors are relatively few in number giving everyone on Malawi tours the opportunity to experience all types of safari, be it in a 4 x 4 vehicle, by boat, or even on horseback.

A Malawi vacation is truly an ornithologist’s paradise. Few countries in the whole of Africa can rival Malawi’s range of bird species, coupled with the relative ease of bird watching. Around 650 species have been identified with over ten percent not being seen in other parts of Southern Africa.

Malawi Travel Information

When is the best time to visit Malawi?

Malawi has a subtropical climate which means it is fairly dry. It has a wet and warm season from November to April when almost all of Malawi’s annual precipitation takes place. There is a hot and dry season from September to October. A good time for a Malawi vacation is between May and October. Winter is warm, sunny and dry around Lake Malawi and is also the best time for game viewing.

There are currently no direct flights to Malawi from Europe or North America. The easiest way to travel there is via Kenya or South Africa.
