Bazaruto Island translates to “Island of the Mist” and is part of the larger Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique’s only underwater national park. Of the five islands that make up the archipelago, Bazaruto is the largest to be visited on a Mozambique vacation.
Bazaruto, along with Benguerra and Magaruque Islands was once part of a sandy peninsula that was originally attached to Mozambique’s mainland but separated over millions of years. The island now stands 37 km (23 mi) long by 7 km (4 mi) wide and hosts a wide variety of flora and fauna. Despite an absence of historical and cultural sites, the natural beauty found on the island more than compensates as Bazaruto remains almost untouched on travel to Mozambique.
Today, the island supports traditional fishermen who still use ancient dhows as their modes of transportation in the water. However, many are not permanent, staying on the island only when the fishing is good.
When travelling to Mozambique, visitors can expect to enjoy stunning beaches that are never overcrowded. For those seeking adventure, dune boarding on enormous sand dunes has become a popular pastime. The island is a haven for birdwatchers yet Bazaruto is perhaps best known for the diving and snorkelling opportunities that abound in the waters surrounding the island. These waters were declared a national park in 1971 and are home to amazing coral teeming with diverse tropical fish.
