Swakopmund

Swakopmund is a beach resort city found of the northwestern coast of the country, perfect after a Namibia safari.  It is the country’s largest coastal city and is often referred to as “Namibia’s Playground” serving as one of the country’s most popular holiday destinations.

The city was originally founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South Africa.  Chosen for the availability of fresh water, Swakopmund quickly became an important trading port for the whole territory.  Following the First World War, harbour activities were transferred to Walvis Bay causing a major economic blow for the city.  As time passed, the potential for a holiday destination was recognised and after the development of a uranium mine in 1976, the city began to expand and prospered.

Today Swakopmund offers a unique mixture of beautiful German colonial buildings and a comfortable summer climate with beaches and adventure sports to be enjoyed on a Namibia tour.. Tourists are able to enjoy the feeling of a small German village as they relax on beaches of cool waters and warm sand.  Thrill seekers can choose to embark on a once in a lifetime opportunity as recent years have witnessed a surge in adrenaline activities including exhilarating dune carting, sand boarding, skydiving, quad biking, deep sea fishing and much more.
