Located in the northeastern part of Namibia is the Kavango region. Dominated by the Okavango River, the region shares international borders with Angola in the north and Botswana in the southeast as well as domestic borders with the Caprivi, Otjozondjupa, Oshikoto and Ohangwena regions. There are two towns in Kavango, the capital Rundu, and Nkurenkuru. There are also two settlements Divundu and Ndiyona and the region hosts five different tribes.
Highlights of the Kavango region on a Namibia safari include the Mahango Game Reserve and the Khaudum Game Park. The Mahango Game Reserve borders the Okavango River and is one of the only parks in Namibia that allows unguided walking. This area is very remote and hosts over 400 bird species as well including antelope, buffalo, lions, leopards, cheetahs and more.
Khaudum Game Park covers 384,000 hectares of wild and undeveloped land. The park is unfenced which allows animals to travel freely, following their migration routes. Although the park is not visited as much as others within Namibia due to its basic tourist infrastructure, Khaudum offers a unique wildlife encounter. A variety of species including large herds of elephants, rare African wild dogs, lions and zebras inhabit this remote park that provides adventure and a true wilderness experience on a Namibia safari.
