Jeddah is the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia, the gateway to the holy city of Makkah (Mecca), and arguably the most liberal city in the nation. Located on the coastline of the Red Sea, Jeddah used to be a way station for pilgrims and traders passing inland to the holy cities or caravan routes. Today, it’s an attractive city for travellers who want to shop in local souks, explore the diving sites and beaches along the coastline, and enjoy a world-class food scene.

Jeddah Old Town, known as Al Balad, is the city’s historic centre. First built in the 7th century, the Old Town’s winding avenues, modest shops, and market atmosphere recalls a Saudi Arabia prior to the oil boom of the 1970s and 1980s. Al Khayyat Center offers a modern contrast to the Old Town, with designer stores and luxury brands in an ultramodern shopping centre. Family travellers should consider visiting Al Shallal Theme Park, one of the most popular amusement parks in the Middle East. Jeddah is also home to some noteworthy mosques that are open to non-Muslims, including Al Taqwa Mosque, Al Rahma Mosque, and King Fahd Mosque.
