Harare Tours & Travel Packages
Harare, the capital and largest city in Zimbabwe is located on the higher part of the Highveld Plateau in the Mashonaland East Province to the northeast of the country on a Zimbabwe tour. It serves as the administrative, commercial and communication centre of Zimbabwe.
The Pioneer Column, a military volunteer force organized by Cecil Rhodes founded the city as a fort on 12 September 1890. Originally known as Salisbury, the area became a municipality in 1897 and then a city in 1935. It retained the name Salisbury until 1982 when, for the second anniversary of Zimbabwean independence, it changed to Harare in honour of the Shona chieftain Neharawa.
Nicknamed ‘The Sunshine City’, Harare is known for its year-round good weather. A fairly cosmopolitan city, it is one of the most developed in Southern Africa. A beautiful place to see on travel to Zimbabwe, Harare is home to numerous parks and gardens. The National Botanic Garden is 68 hectares in size and hosts over 900 species of wild trees and shrubs from around Zimbabwe while Mukuvisi Woodlands, a wildlife sanctuary, spans 227 hectares. There is also a strong appreciation for the culture and history of the city. This is evident in both the National Gallery and the National Archives which houses original works by some of the most famous names in African exploration.
