Bangkok is the capital and largest city in Thailand. One of Asia’s most cosmopolitan cities, Bangkok features modern buildings with awe-inspiring architecture, magnificent temples and palaces, canals that remain a crucial part of city life, and busy markets, all to be experienced on trips to Thailand. Bangkok is located in Thailand’s central plains, along the Chao Phraya River delta, which empties into the Gulf of Thailand, approximately 25 km to the south. Chao Phraya River meanders through Bangkok from north to south and plays an important role in the city’s daily life.

Bangkok Travel Information

History of Bangkok

The Thai capital since 1782, Bangkok was once a village situated on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. Because of its ideal location near the mouth of the river, Bangkok served as a customs outpost on both sides of the river, and gradually expanded economically through international trade. Before the 19th century, bamboo huts were built as dwellings, and with bamboo rafts serving as transportation, floating markets selling fruits and vegetables conducted business on the river itself. Bangkok was considered the ‘Venice of the East,’ with its various canals.

As Western influences took over Asia in the 19th century, Bangkok started replacing some of the canals with roads, and the region expanded rapidly after World War II.

Weather: best time to visit

The climate does vary throughout Thailand but it is a year-round destination. There is no bad time to visit and the weather is fairly hot year-round, at least during the day. There is a rainy season from July to October, but don’t be put off as the rain passes quickly and helps to cool the temperatures. In Bangkok, it can be cool year-round in the evening. The coolest, driest season in this part of Thailand runs from November to early April.

A visit to the Temples 

Although quite a modern metropolis, Bangkok offers historic cultural attractions such as the Grand Palace (home of the Emerald Buddha), Wat Pho (home of the Reclining Buddha), and Wat Arun (a stunning temple and place of worship for many Buddhists). River Canal Cruise
