The unofficial capital of Khanh Hoa Province during French Indochina, Nha Trang was home to various administrative offices, while royal offices were situated just 10km southwest in a walled city called Dien Khanh.
Over the course of the 20th century, Nha Trang continued to expand and was officially listed as the capital of Khanh Hoa province, as well as being recognized as a first-class municipal city.
Primarily a beach resort town, Nha Trang is an important tourist hub for Vietnam vacation packages. Tran Phu Street sometimes referred to as the Pacific Coast Highway, runs along the seaside and features various hotels, shops, and eateries.
Lying off the coast of Nha Trang is Hon Tre Island (Bamboo Island), a five-star resort and theme park, and is linked to the mainland by a gondola lift system.
