Tahiti Island Vacations and Honeymoon Packages

  • Enjoy Kayaking while on your Tahiti vacation
  • Beautiful sunsets are a great photo opportunity while on your Tahiti vacation
  • Overwater bungalows is a great choice of accommodation on all Tahiti vacations

The first port of call in French Polynesia will possibly be the island of Tahiti which contains the only International airport. Although you may be just connecting to one of the outer islands, Tahiti definitely has its attractions and allure. It is the largest island and was formed from volcanic activity which explains the terrain of the island. This beautiful island is surrounded by coral reefs, black sand beaches, lush rainforests, deep valleys, high waterfalls, clear streams and rivers, all to be experienced on a Tahiti vacation. The interior is very sparsely populated and most of the population lives in or near the capital, Papeete, the economic, cultural and political centre. 70 percent of the population here is indigenous.

The island of Tahiti which is shaped like figure 8 consists of two distinct parts, Tahiti Nui, by far the larger part and Tahiti It. Tahiti is approximately 45 kilometres/28 miles in length at its widest point. The highest mountain is Mount Orohena at 2240 metres/7350 feet in height. There are 3 extinct volcanoes on the island.

Everywhere you travel, especially along the coast, you will see an abundance of exotic flowers on a Tahiti vacation.

You can explore the mountainous interior on a 4 x 4 wheel drive guided safari, a guided nature hike or simply take a helicopter ride. For excellent panoramic views on Tahiti tours, visit the Plateau of Taravao which connects the two parts of the island.

Hotels are dotted all around the coast and many feature the iconic overwater bungalows with glass floors under which multiple tropical fish swim in droves.

Papeete is a city with busy boulevards and a bustling harbour. There are a number of attractions here well worth a visit on Tahiti vacation packages. There is the Papeete Market which sells everything from food to handicrafts, the Paul Gauguin Museum with exhibits this famous painter’s works, the Museum of Tahiti, an ethnographical museum with many interesting artifacts and cultural themes and the Robert Wan Pearl Museum, the world’s only museum dedicated to pearls. The Tahiti Lagoonarium is a not to miss attraction, especially for marine life lovers. It is actually an aquarium beneath the water with more than 1,000 species of wonderful marine life that includes colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, and reef sharks. Then for lovers of horticulture, do visit the Water Gardens of Vaipahi with its exotic flowers and plants.

For shopping enthusiasts, consider the following local “buys” – wood carvings, wooden drums, quilts, sculptures, mats woven from coconut and local artists’ paintings. Of course, one of the major offerings here is Tahitian Black Pearls which actually come in an array of colours. One can visit any of the pearl farms on the island.

For the more active, Tahiti offers many water sports such as snorkeling, scuba diving, windsurfing, water skiing, horseback riding and deep sea fishing. There are many world-class diving sites on the island with its clear waters in which there is a plethora of tropical fish and even mantra rays to view. One unusual attraction is the ability to watch reef sharks being fed up close.

Tahiti has one of the two golf courses available in French Polynesia, the Olivier Breaud International Golf Course.

As is offered elsewhere in the islands, one can have a traditional Tahitian Wedding Ceremony which is recognized in both Canada and the United States. If visiting in July on a Tahiti vacation, consider attending the colourful Helva Festival, a celebration of traditional culture, music and dancing.
