Covering an area of 34,800 acres in northern Costa Rica, Rincón de la Vieja National Park is part of the Conservation Area Guanacaste. Due to increased tourist traffic in nearby Liberia, more people are beginning to discover this unique and unexplored destination on a Costa Rica vacation.
Rincón de la Vieja National Park was created in 1973 in a bid to protect the thirty-two rivers and streams that have their sources within the park. The main attraction is the cinder cone Volcano Rincón de la Vieja which stands at 1,895 m (6,217 ft). Volcanic activity has occurred many times since the 1960s, however, the last eruption was in 1998. The elevations of the park range from 600 m to 1,916 m (1,968.5 - 6,286.08 ft) allowing visitors the opportunity to pass through a variety of habitats including tropical forests and cloud forests that provide a safe haven for a variety of nature and wildlife.
The park’s relatively remote location means that animals that are considered rare elsewhere are not so rare within Rincón de la Vieja. Jaguars, pumas, various monkey species (howler, spider, white-faced-kinkajous), sloths, tapirs and over 300 species of bird all inhabit the park.
