Uruguay: Bucket List Travel Ideas

  • Montevideo's unique Old Town

Why is Uruguay considered a top bucket list destination?

Uruguay is a small country that deserves to be visited for its rich culture, art, and food. Uruguay is one of the most progressive countries in the world. Its capital, Montevideo not only has one of the highest standards of living in South America but it is also the safest. In Montevideo, you can admire its architecture combined with its relaxed ambience, travel to some close-by beach towns or visit the majestic old city of Colonia del Sacramento famous for its colonial architecture and its very old cars and last but not least, its food. Try “Chivito” Uruguay’s national dish with thin slices of steak and vegetables served with french fries, “Tortas Fritas” biscuits, kind of like fried bread with sugar sprinkled on top, perfect for a rainy day and its traditional Asado (bbq) that includes steak, ribs, chicken, pork and lamb.

What are the top bucket list activities on an Uruguay vacation?

Montevideo has a deep appreciation for the arts, so don't miss out on a city tour to admire the Independence Plaza, Salvo Palace, the Lighthouse or Fortress Hill,  Make some time to visit the many art galleries, or take in ballets or musical shows. Motntevodep also boasts a scenic 20 km long Río de la Plata walk along the waterfront. Another destination is Punta del Este, two hours east of Montevideo, a high-end beach resort, perfect for relaxation and nightlife. If you want to avoid crowds, it should be visited during the off-season. And finally, visit  Colonia del Sacramento, famous for its old, beautiful cobblestone streets and its colonial-style buildings everywhere you look.
