Tallinn Tours and Vacation Packages
Tallinn is situated on the northern coast of the country on the shores of the Gulf of Finland, 80 kilometres/50 miles south of Helsinki, east of Stockholm and west of St. Petersburg. Tallinn's Old Town is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was a European Capital of Culture in 2011. It was known as Reval from the 13th century until 1917 and again during the German invasion of Estonia from 1941 to 1944. The population is around 430,000. A limestone cliff runs through the city and can be seen in several areas. The highest point in Tallinn is only 64 metres/208 feet above sea level. Like most cities with an eight-hundred-year-old past, Tallinn is a patchwork of historic areas. The city's pride and joy on Estonia tours is without a doubt its Medieval Old Town, but equally enchanting is the Kadriorg district, a throwback to the time when Estonia was ruled by the Russian Czars. Other areas of Tallinn are perfect for those who want to get a glimpse of Soviet-era life.
Probably the most fascinating part of the city is the Medieval old town with its twisting cobblestone lanes and iron street lamps, Gothic spires and medieval markets. However, there are many cafes, restaurants and boutiques so if you are looking for a mix of historic ambience and cutting-edge culture that defines Tallinn, you will find it here. Built up from the 13th to 16th centuries, when it was a thriving member of the Hanseatic trade league, this enclosed neighbourhood of colourful, gabled houses, half-hidden courtyards and grandiose churches is, quite rightly, the city's biggest attraction And the fact that it is contained within a mostly intact city wall and dotted with guard towers, gives it a fairytale charm.
Kadriorg and its streets are as good as a unique architectural museum, weaving together various centuries and cultures. Noble villas and summer estates, functionalist apartment buildings with stately flats are interspersed with cheaper Estonian rented wooden houses.
Kadriorg is one of the more dignified areas even today, and one of the best-loved residential regions of Tallinn. The Estonian president’s residence and many foreign embassies are located here. The park is one of the favourite spots for walking but Kadriorg is famous mostly for its baroque palace and park built in 1718 as the summer palace for the family of Russian Czar Peter I which can be visited on Estonia tours.
Like many Medieval cities, Tallinn has its share of underground passageways, particularly the defensive Bastion tunnel system built in the 1600s during the time of Swedish rule. Some tunnels were forgotten but as late as 2003, workers digging a foundation near the OccupationMuseum found a pentagonal system of limestone-lined tunnels dating back to the end of the 17th century. On a tunnel tour, visitors on Estonia tours can see some of the old equipment leftovers from that era, as well as parts of the tunnel that still retain their more Medieval look. The tour includes a slow-moving train ride, where guests are shown the various stages of the tunnels' past, and even a few decades into their possible future.
There is no doubt that the ambience and numerous attractions of Tallinn will captivate the visitor.
