  • The magnificent Colosseum
  • The Vatican - for many the highlight of their Italy vacation.
  • Roman Forum
  • Colosseum
  • St. Peter's Basilica

Known as the Eternal City, Rome is one of Europe’s most ancient urban centres, dating back almost 3,000 years. Its early inhabitants left behind a treasure trove of architectural masterpieces to be appreciated on an Italy vacation. The Italian capital also boasts an unparalleled concentration of world class art and teems with restaurants, trattorias, pizzerias, enotechas, cafés, bars, and ice cream parlours.  It is home to the animated, good-humoured Romans who live to eat, drink wine and drink espresso. Rome also encompasses the Catholic Church’s independent city-state, the Vatican which is home to the imposing St. Peter’s Basilica and the Pope.

All the attractions of Rome are too numerous to cover here but the following essential sites and places are some of the most important and universally recognized.

The territory of Vatican City is, where St. Peter's Basilica, the Apostolic Palace, the Sistine Chapel, and museums were built. It is separated from the city on the west bank of the Tiber River. Originally, the area was a suburb that was protected.  The territory includes Saint Peter's Square, separated from the territory of Italy only by a white line along the limit of the square.  St. Peter’s Basilica was designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Raphael and Bernini. It is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and remains one of the largest churches in the world. St. Peter's is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic sites.  The Sistine Chapel is a large and renowned chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the Pope in the Vatican City. The chapel has served as a place of both religious and functionary papal activity. Today it is the site of the Papal conclave, the process by which a new Pope is selected. The fame of the Sistine Chapel lies mainly in the frescos that decorate the interior, and most particularly the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgment by Michelangelo.

The Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city. Built of concrete and stone, it was the largest amphitheatre of the Roman Empire and is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering. It is also the largest amphitheatre in the world and was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles.

Nearby is the Roman Forum, a rectangular forum (plaza) surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings. Citizens of the ancient city referred to this space, originally a marketplace, as the Forum.

The Trevi Fountain is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world. The fountain has appeared in several notable films, including Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita, and is a popular tourist attraction.

The Piazza Navona is a very attractive and charming city square in Rome. The square is flanked by restaurants and terraces and during the day there is a wonderful atmosphere. This is a lively area where, on a trip to Italy, you can enjoy performances of different street artists, such as magicians and dancers, at virtually any time of day.

The Roman Pantheon is the best preserved and most influential building of ancient Rome. It is a Roman temple dedicated to all the gods of pagan Rome.  Probably one of the most fascinating features of the Pantheon is the architecture. The structure of the Pantheon is comprised of a series of intersecting arches. The detail of this building is extraordinary

The Caracalla Baths of were the second largest Roman public baths. They are today a tourist attraction. The central part of the bath complex is the summer home of the Rome Opera company. It is also a concert venue having achieved fame as the venue and backdrop for the first Three Tenors concert in 1990.

The Villa Borghese is a large landscaped garden designed in the English style containing a number of buildings, museums and attractions. The gardens as they are now were remade in the early nineteenth century. The renowned art gallery, the Galleria Borghese is situated here.

Via Vittorio Veneto, colloquially called Via Veneto, is one of the most famous, elegant and expensive streets in the city. Federico Fellini's classic 1960 film La Dolce Vita was mostly centered on the Via Veneto area. Some of Rome's most renowned cafés and five star hotels, like Café de Paris and Harry's Bar, as well as known haunts for celebrities in Rome, are in the Via Veneto, not to be missed on Italy vacations.

Trastevere, literally meaning across the Tiber River, maintains its character thanks to its narrow cobbled streets lined by medieval houses. At night, natives and visitors alike flock to its many cafes, bars and restaurants, but much of the original character of Trastevere remains. This unique character of the neighbourhood has attracted artists, foreign expats, and many famous people.
