A step beyond your typical Italy vacation, Sicily has a wealth of attractions to offer. Explore charming historic cities, archaeological sites left by Roman, Greek, and Phoenician civilizations, excellent beaches, active volcanoes, medieval castles and churches, palaces and villas plus much more. Even the food and wine are unique to Sicily, with settlers (or invaders) from Asia, Africa, and Europe all leaving their mark on its culture.

Palermo is Sicily's capital city. It offers ancient and medieval historic districts almost as large as their counterparts in Rome and Naples. It is an excellent city for shopping (specialty merchandise includes ceramics and jewellery) and dining. Interesting visits include the magnificent cathedral dating back to the 12th Century, the archaeological museum, the Cappuccini catacombs which contain over 8000, some well-preserved, mummies, and the street markets.

Syracuse is one of the principal historic cities in Sicily founded by the Greeks in the 7th Century BC and has been described as “a window into the ancient history of the Mediterranean”. There is a wealth of treasures to be found here, There are the charming, narrow streets in the old city of Ortygia with its Roman and Greek remains, the cathedral built on the site of the Temple of Athena, its Roman amphitheatre, the site of Thapsos, an ancient Mycenaean settlement dating back to 1500 BC and Euryalus Castle complete with moats and high walls dating back to the 4th Century BC. The Orsi Archaeological Museum is Sicily’s best, with wonderful displays. The Bellamo Palace, originally built as a castle, houses an art gallery.

Taormina is a mountaintop town overlooking the sea and is Sicily's best-known resort with nearby sandy beaches and a myriad of restaurants and shops. However, that is not all there is to experience on a trip to Italy. There is a historic side to Taormina which includes a medieval old quarter, a Greek amphitheatre offering dramatic performances during the summer, a panoramic, breathtaking view of Mount Etna and medieval walls which enclose the old town's cobblestone streets. There are several castles and two medieval fortresses.

Catania is a city located at the foot of Mount Etna and the second-largest city in Sicily. It is a university city with a busy city centre and an active nightlife. It is well-known for its baroque architecture. There is an imposing Norman cathedral, the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre, bustling and fun markets and the Via Etnea, which is the main shopping street and centre of Catania’s lively venue for locals.

Agrigento was founded around the 5th Century BC. This medieval city is not without a certain charm. It has a tremendous legacy from the Roman, Greek and Byzantine eras. In the historic centre of the city, there is a Romanesque, Gothic cathedral built in the 14th Century, the 13th Century Church of San Nicola (St Nicholas) and a number of Greek temples, theatres and ruins which date back to BC. Just outside of Agrigento is the Valley of Temples, a large archaeological site surrounded by olive groves and almond orchards to be visited on an Italy vacation.

The infamous Mount Etna is Sicily's greatest natural attraction, its highest mountain and Europe’s highest active volcano at 3350 metres/10,990 feet. Much of Etna’s surface is covered with solidified lava. It was known to ancient civilizations as a sacred mountain. A visit is possible on an organized tour and it is also possible to hike up the mountain. There are ski slopes on its shoulders where snow exists.

There are so many other interesting sites to visit in Sicily which are too numerous to mention. Time here will be well spent and rewarding.
