Sweden: Kiruna

Kiruna is the northernmost town on trips to Sweden situated in Lapland, 145 kilometres/90 miles north of the Arctic Circle. It is partially surrounded by mountains visible from the town. Sweden’s highest mountain is 75 kilometres/47 miles from Kiruna again visible from the town. Highlights in Kiruna include a visit to an iron ore mine, the Kiruna Church built in 1912 which is one of Sweden’s largest wooden buildings, the Abisko Scientific Research Station and the Esrange Space Centre. Activities include dog sledding in winter and hiking in national parks and in the mountains, walking on trails, rafting and canoeing. It is also a popular place to see the Midnight Sun in the summer and the Northern Lights in the winter. Nearby, in the village of Jukkasjarvi, is an Ice Hotel which is rebuilt each year for the winter and the world’s first and largest hotel made from ice and snow on Sweden vacations.
