The city of Stockholm is spread over 14 islands connected by 50 bridges on the southeast coast of Sweden. It combines classical and modern architecture reflected in many of its interesting buildings. It is a city rich in culture and history, to be experienced on Sweden vacations.

The heart of Stockholm is the Old Town is known as Gamla Stan, the picturesque original city centre dating back to the 13th Century with its cobblestone streets, alleyways, quaint shops and palaces and home to several museums. Stockholm Palace is located here. This 600-room baroque-style building is the official residence of the Royal Family although they actually reside elsewhere. One can visit the palace including the royal suites. The actual building which is home to the Royal Family is the beautifully preserved and outstanding Drottningholm Palace. Stockholm City Hall is an attractive building which is the venue for the Nobel Peace Prize awards banquet and has the largest pipe organ in Scandinavia. There is a museum devoted to the history of the Nobel Peace Prize not to be missed on Swedish vacations

Ridderholmen Church is one of the most beautiful in Sweden and is its only remaining medieval abbey. Another interesting church is the gothic-style Stockholm Cathedral situated in the Old Town and which dates back to the 13th Century.

Stockholm has 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites. One is Drottningholm Palace. The other two are Skogskyrkogarden also known as Woodlands Cemetery, a 250-acre place of sublime beauty and home to several chapels and a visitors centre and  Birka, a small town close to the city where excavations have found remains from the Viking era.

Stockholm has 100 museums of varying kinds to satisfy you on trips to Sweden. Probably the best known is the Vasa Museum with its preserved 17th Century sailing ship which sank but was salvaged and eventually displayed in this museum. For art lovers, the National Museum has over 16,000 paintings from all periods, the largest painting collection in Sweden. The Museum of Modern Art has several works by Picasso and Dali. The Stockholm City Museum houses a collection of artifacts relating to the city’s history.

Not officially an art gallery but the Stockholm Metro in 90 of its 100 stations have exhibits of sculptures, mosaics, paintings and engravings by more than 150 artists. A ride on the subway system is well worthwhile on Sweden vacations.

Skansen is an open-air museum showcasing traditional Swedish rural life. The world’s first open-air museum consists of authentic buildings and people dressed in original country costumes.

Djurgarden is a green island and a popular park. It is home to several museums, cafes and restaurants and is reached by ferry from the city.

One other delightful thing to do on Swedish vacations is to take a cruise from the city centre around the many small islands surrounding the city.
