Los Angeles Tours, Trips & Travel Experiences
It’s said that if you tipped the world over on its side, anything not nailed down would land in Los Angeles. That quote has been attributed to everyone from Mark Twain to architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and its longevity suggests more than a grain of truth. Los Angeles has been a sunny refuge for America’s creatives and misfits since its beginnings, and those diverse influences come together in a sprawling metropolis that has shaped American culture like no other city.
Los Angeles is imprinted on our imaginations. From the movies we watch to the music we listen to, it’s hard not to feel like you ‘know L.A.’ The truth is unless you live there, you really can’t. But a few days in the City of Angels is enough to fall in love with it, whether you’re looking for Hollywood legends, soaking up the Pacific sun, or searching for ‘the real L.A.’ (if such a thing exists) in this megacity’s hippest neighbourhoods.
Hollywood is the L.A. of myth, and while it’s only a fraction of the city’s story, it’s as good a place as any to start. Snap your photo in between dodging tourist traps at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, then follow the stars along Hollywood Boulevard to the less crowded Egyptian Theatre, the home of Hollywood’s first movie premiere, Robin Hood in October 1922. You can opt for a tour of either one, or swing by the Hollywood Museum to surround yourself with stories, set pieces, and memorabilia. If you really want to be close to the action, take a studio tour, offered in various forms at Warner Bros., Paramount, and Sony (formerly the home of MGM). A Universal Studios tour is offered only as an attraction at their highly recommended namesake theme park.
For years, visitors turned their noses up at Downtown L.A. Now, much has changed, with a wide range of world-class cultural attractions on offer including The Broad for an eye-popping collection of modern art, the exquisite Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Grammy Museum, and the always rotating Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk. Downtown is also a flavorsome melting pot of L.A. history. Don’t miss the El Pueblo Monument, the gorgeous Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, the Bradbury Building, the world’s shortest train line, Angels Flight Railway, and museums devoted to both Japanese American and Chinese American culture and history. Take a walking tour with a knowledgeable guide if you’re not sure where to start.
L.A.’s geography is defined by the beach and the hills. Drive up into the latter and take in the awesome view from the Getty Center, an astonishing fusion of cutting-edge design and timeless art. Stop in at Griffith Observatory, where science nerds of all ages can geek out exploring one of America’s top collections devoted to astronomy. There’s a great view of the Hollywood sign to be had from here too.
When you’re ready to hit the beach, join the kitschy fun of Santa Monica with its famous pier, or head to Venice for the more offbeat side of the L.A. beach experience. More offbeat, yet trendy L.A. awaits in the cafes, bars, restaurants, and bookstores of Echo Park, Silver Lake, and Los Feliz, where young Angelinos come to feed their creative appetites. If your shopping tastes (or aspirations) run less hipster and more upscale, hit Rodeo Drive, L.A.’s definitive hub for luxury shopping.
Leave your stereotypes at home (or bring them, L.A. doesn’t care), hire a car, open your mind, and soak up all the attitude, art, and ambition Los Angeles has to offer.
