There are tons of activities that can show you good a time in south-central Alaska. You can take a stout, fast-moving ATV ride along beautiful river valleys and deep forests of pine, then turn off into a river and splash your way through the water. Yes, you might want to take a raincoat.

Grizzly bears are common in the area, and you can easily arrange visits to see them in their native habitat, at least when they’re not hibernating. You also can witness majestic bald eagles swooping and soaring through the pure mountain air.

This, of course, is northern North America. This means you’ve got a good chance to see the Northern Lights. Some tour companies offer visits to remote areas where’s little or no light pollution, which makes it ideal for both amateur and professional photographers.

Another great option is a helicopter and dogsled tour, where you can relax in a sled and watch eager dogs dash about on the hard-packed snow or a frozen lake as you enjoy the scenery. If the owner says it’s okay, be sure to give them a well-deserved treat when your ride is over.
The Matanuska Glacier is a beautiful spot that’s very popular with tour groups. There’s nothing quite like a short hike on an ancient glacier under a clear, blue Alaskan sky.
