Portugal to Spain River Cruise: Porto, Douro Valley, Salamanca & More
- Duration
- 8 Days
- Prices:
- On request
FIRST-CLASS | CRUISE: Portugal may not be the first name you think of for a European cruise, but a journey up the Rio Douro might just change your mind. Set sail from Porto, travelling all the way up to Spain before returning.
Please see LEFT BAR for ship details and other cruise info.
This 8-day cruise through Northern Portugal takes you through some of the country’s most spectacular wine regions, taking you all the way up to the Salamanca region of Spain.
Your departure port, Porto, is one of Europe’s up and coming highlight cities. The birthplace of port wine, it’s also one of the oldest cities in Europe, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Enjoy a night-time and day-time tour, and perhaps discover the fascinating history of the city’s trams. Then travel up the Douro to Regua, enjoying dinner on board, and an excursion out to Guimaraes, another of Portugal’s most historic towns (it also ticks another World Heritage site off your list).
Sailing on to Vila Real, take a walk through the gardens of Mateus Palace, a relatively new (18th century), but nonetheless opulent and fascinating structure designed by Italian artist and architect Nicolau Nasoni. The splendor continues aboard ship during the night with a flamenco show as you approach the Spanish border.
Stop in Barca d’Alva, where a tour takes you to explore the city’s cathedral. Or perhaps you’d prefer to explore Salamanca by bike. Barca d’Alva is just 2 kilometres from the Salamanca, so adding a touch of the Spanish countryside to your Portugal vacation is easy. Return to the ship, which takes you on to a wine tasting excursion where you can savour the famous flavours of Porto. Your final day trip takes you to Lamego, a key city during the Portuguese Barroque period of the 17th and 18th centuries.
Bid farewell to Portugal with an evening of traditional entertainment before you disembark back in Porto.
