Chile Deluxe: Santiago, Torres del Paine & Atacama

Duration
12 Days
Prices From:
US$ 6,929

DELUXE | PRIVATE-GUIDED: Superb wine, spectacular vistas, and incomparable experiences are in abundance on this 12-day exploration of Chile. You’ll begin in Santiago, carry on to Torres del Paine, and cap off your trip with a few nights under the stars in the Atacama desert.

This 12-day trip through Chile invites you to explore ever-changing Santiago, before discovering the wilderness of the Torres del Paine and the serene stillness of the Atacama Desert. Enjoy deluxe accommodations as you go.

Begin with a tour of Santiago on your first full day in Chile. The journey takes you from its origins as a Spanish settlement to the natural beauty afforded Santiago by its spectacular location at the foot of the Andes. Visit the Plaza de Armas and the Presidential Palace, as well as the San Francisco Church. Your tour takes only three hours, giving you the rest of the day to explore this always-eclectic, art-loving city on your own. Check out its coolest neighbourhoods or save your energy for exploring its unpretentious nightlife. Of course, Chile is also a major wine exporter. Take a full day in the Maipo Valley exploring the vineyards and tasting the fruits of Central Chile’s unique terroir.

There’s arguably no trio of peaks more famous than the Torres del Paine, located in Chile’s southern Patagonia region. After a day to transfer and relax, you’ll have your choice of half-day or full-day excursions, all of which are optional, depending on your preferred level of activity. From walks to horse riding to kayaking, Patagonia is a gorgeous setting, and there’s something for all fitness levels, with knowledgeable guides ensuring you get the most out of the region. With three nights here, you also don’t have to cram everything into your first day.

Return to Santiago for a cheeky side trip to Valparaiso, Chile’s gorgeous port city. Like Santiago, it’s got a bit of an underground, DIY feel, with colourful facades and elevators to help everyone navigate its steep streets. But there’s a reason Valparaiso has its own UNESCO World Heritage listing. Among its devotees was poet Pablo Neruda, who called this charismatic city home. Right next door is the Garden City of Vina del Mar, a popular beach resort for Santiago and Valparaiso locals alike.

Your next and final Chile stop is San Pedro de Atacama, the incredible desert landscape that dominates Northern Chile. It’s one of the driest regions on Earth, and its clear skies have made it a major centre of astronomy with some of the most powerful telescopes on the planet. Back on the ground, however, the desert comes alive with vivid colours year-round, creating another incredible natural landscape in Chile’s collection. Enjoy a full-day tour, and take an additional day for optional excursions or activities before you depart.

Day 2

Santiago City Tour with Santa Lucia Hill

Santiago de Chile was founded in 1541 by the Spanish Conquistador Pedro de Valdivia who was sent by the conqueror of the Incas, Pizzaro, to establish a new capital in the fast growing Spanish Empire in the New World. Much of the core layout as designed by the master builder Pedro de Gamboa remains to this day. During the Half day city tour you will visit key locations where the rich history of the city played out.

The tour starts with a visit to "Forestal Park", which runs along Mapocho River - water that penetrates the land. The river itself flows from the Andes and cuts the city of Santiago in two. It is then onto Santa Lucia Hill, the actual spot on where the city was founded. A geographical high point of the area the hill is now adorned with wonderful facades, fountains and stairways, including "Neptuno Terrace" at the summit. Neptuno Terrace is reminiscent of the Trevi fountain and its surrounds are now a public park located alongside the National Library. You then travel to the heart of the city and Plaza de Armas the spot from where the city has grown throughout the centuries. Each Latin city has a plaza de Armas as when cities were founded the center was also were the armory and military base was established - hence the name Plaza de Armas (Plaza of Arms). Visit some of the more important buildings such as the Cathedral, the City Council, the Central Post Office and the National Historical Museum. Continue to the Presidential Palace "La Moneda"; the current seat of the government. You will wander the streets that were once elegant at the beginning of the 19th century and now are a commercial center. Pass by Dieciocho Street that has been deemed as "typical" example of architecture from the period as well as the Cousino Palace built around 1870 and the Basilica de los Sacramentinos, a blatant imitation of the Sacred Heart Church of Montmartre in Paris. Finally reach Bernardo O'Higgins Avenue better known as "Alameda", which is the main street of the city where the tour concludes with a visit only to the San Francisco Church, located in the heart of Santiago, built between 1586 and 1628 by the Franciscan order and is the oldest colonial era building in the country.

The Concha y Toro Winery was founded in 1883 by Don Melchor Concha y Toro. This vineyard currently produces more than 11 thousand barrels of fine wine that is aged in American and French oak. The historic gardens and house compliment the visit, which also includes a wine tasting and a full explanation of the production process.

Day 8

Full Day Vina del Mar and Valparaiso Private

Departing from downtown Santiago you head toward the coast, located just 120 kilometers / 75 miles from Santiago, crossing the fertile Curacavi and Casablanca Valleys, with their beautiful vineyards, fruit tree farms, and forest reserves. En route you will visit the two major cities of the country: Vina del Mar, Chile's main seaside town and Valparaiso, a port city founded in the sixteenth century and declared as "World Heritage Site by UNESCO." The tour also includes a scenic tour through National Congress, Parque O'Higgins, Parque Italia, Plaza de la Victoria, Plaza Sotomayor and "Muelle Prat Wharf located at the port itself in Valparaiso. Then visit the Museum of the famous Chilean poet, writer and Nobel Prize Literature winner (1971) Pablo Neruda La Sebastiana House-Museum. La Sebastiana was a fantasy destination that Pablo Neruda wanted to run to, and away from the hectic and busy pace of Santiago. "I want to find in Valparaiso a little house to live and write quietly. It must have some conditions..."

This was how Pablo Neruda put it in 1959 to his friends Sara Vial and Marie Martner. The house became a reality and now houses a collections of old maps, seascapes and other paintings. There are many other relics from the port and other curios such as music boxes and an old horse carved in wood. You will visit the elevators - cable cars that take you to the peaks around Valparaiso with amazing look outs - miradores - offering views of the city. Cerro Alegre-Cerro Conception, Sotomayo Square, Naval Heroes Monument, and Paseo 21 de Mayo at Cerro Playa Ancha are just a few sites you will see.

Vina del Mar, also known as "the Garden City", has 300,000 inhabitants and is the country's main beach resort. Located next to the Port of Valparaiso, it has a good selection of restaurants, a casino, cafes, discotheques and good shops. Past and present intermingle in this bustling tourist centre. Here, you will visit the "Flowers Clock", "Quinta Vergaera", Muelle Vergara, and the casino, before your guide takes you for a drive along the coast to Renaca Beach. Return to your Hotel.
