Social Conventions
Indonesian people are very polite and extremely courteous and can be quite conservative. Modest dress should be worn to avoid unwanted attention. When eating, food and drink should not be touched until the host invites guests to do so. Also, one should never accept or pass anything with the left hand. Displays of public affection are often frowned upon in Indonesia.
Religion
Indonesia is the largest Islamic country in the world with 88% of the population belonging to the Muslim faith. Protestants make up approximately 5%, Roman Catholics make up approximately 3% and Buddhists represent 1% of the population (an additional 1% of the people in Indonesia belong to other religions).
Language
Indonesian, or “Bahasa Indonesian” is the official language of the country however, it is most of the population’s second language. Due to the size and number of islands in Indonesia, most people speak regional dialects at the home (there are approximately 583 languages) but speak Indonesian in the workplace or at school. English is commonly used in tourism destinations.
