Costa Rica Geography and Maps
Located on the Central American isthmus, Costa Rica is bordered by both Nicaragua and Panama. The landscape of the country is varied and includes cloud forests, volcanoes, waterfalls, hot springs, valleys and rainforests. The country boasts a large coastline of 1,290 km (800 mi) that borders both the Pacific Ocean with 1,016 km (631 mi) and the Caribbean Sea with 212 km (132 mi). The northwest coast of the Pacific is characterized by savannah and dry forest that heads into mangroves and rainforests in the south while parts of the Caribbean coast are inaccessible which has helped it to preserve large tracts of virgin lowland forest.
There are three mountain ranges that run through the country. The first is the Cordillera de Guanacaste which runs from the northern border with Nicaragua to the Cordillera Central. The Cordillera Central stretches through the centre of the country while the southern Cordillera de Talamanca runs into the Central Valley. Costa Rica’s Central Valley is a plateau with a good climate that hosts much of the country’s population as well as its coffee trade. The highest peak in the country is the Irazú Volcano which at 3,431 m (11,257 ft) makes it the fifth highest peak in Central America.
