  • The Portland Head Lighthouse, Maine

The New England states are famous for their charming villages, idyllic landscapes, covered bridges and amazing autumn foliage.

Vermont’s picturesque town of Stowe with its weathered barns and white-spired churches, as well as a lovely, covered bridge - there are over one hundred in the entire state - has that iconic New England look. It also claims the Trapp Family Lodge, home of the Austrian von Trapp family, made famous by The Sound of Music, one of the most successful movies of all time. On the shores of beautiful Lake Champlain, the vibrant city of Burlington is steeped in arts and culture, boasting great restaurants and a lively downtown.

New Hampshire’s rugged White Mountains offer gorgeous vistas whether you are enjoying a drive through delightful valleys or leaving your car for a hike. Alternatively, you can take a cog railway to the top of Mt. Washington, which rises more than 1,900 metres above sea level, for an awesome panoramic view. Portsmouth is an engaging oceanfront city with historic buildings that have been well-preserved, while a visit to Lake Winnipesaukee allows you to explore several uniquely different villages along its shores by boat or by car.

Maine is world-renowned for its lobster and lighthouses, as well as postcard-worthy coastlines. Try the scenic Park Loop Road through stunning Acadia National Park, an amazing twenty-seven miles driving experience Delightful Bar Harbor is the summer playground for the Bush family and other New England socialites, while Old Orchard Beach is one of the last remaining oceanfront amusement parks in the United States. It’s beautifully old-fashioned, but a lot of fun.

Last but not least, Rhode Island is home to Newport, the sailing capital of the World, and some of the wealthiest folks in America. Take a tour of The Breakers, a palatial, 70-room home built by Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1895 or enjoy a bit of serenity, walking the just under six-kilometre scenic Cliff Walk along the ocean with its enchanting panoramic ocean views. Providence, the capital, enjoys a great reputation among foodies, while its neighbourhoods make it the No. 4 quirkiest city in America. A thriving arts community and renowned restaurant scene have turned the city into an immensely popular spot.
