The Atlas Mountains are a range that stretches for 2,500 km (1,600 mi) along northwestern Africa. The range can be divided into four regions: the Middle Atlas, High Atlas and Anti-Atlas in Morocco, the Saharan Atlas in Algeria and the Tell Atlas and the Aurès Mountains that cover areas in both Algeria and Tunisia.

Indigenous to North Africa, the Berber people have inhabited the coast for more than 5,000 years. After the Arab invasion of the 7th century, the Berbers were forced to either assimilate or escape to the Atlas Mountains. Many chose the mountains and as a result, a relatively pure Berber population still resides there in earthen adobe homes to be seen on Morocco vacations.

The Anti-Atlas Mountains are the most southerly range in Morocco and border the Sahara. Visiting the Anti-Atlas range on Morocco vacations offers a good opportunity to experience Berber culture as Agadir (castles) dot the landscape. The Middle Atlas range experiences snow in winter months due to its elevation. The town of Ifrane enjoys enough snow to accommodate a ski resort, a rarity in Africa. The highest peaks Toubkal at 4,167 m (13,671 ft) and Ouanoukrim at 4,089 m (13,415 ft) belong to the High Atlas section of the range. At the foot of this range is Aït Benhaddou, a fortified mud-brick city and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Aït Benhaddou has served as a backdrop for many films including Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator.
