Venture north to the world-renowned Serengeti National Park, visiting the Olduvai Gorge en route, one of the world’s most important paleoanthropological localities with traces of pre-historic man from 3.5 million years ago. Search for the Big Five—elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino—and over 518 species of bird as you embark on a full-day game drive through the world’s most famous wildlife sanctuary, home of the Great Migration, and the world’s greatest concentration of plains game.

Travel through the Serengeti National Park to the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact caldera. Descend over 600 m / 1,969 ft into Africa’s Eden and search for local elephants, monkeys, herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, Grants’ gazelles, hyena, cheetah, black rhino, and elusive leopards.

Continue to the expansive acacia woodlands, ancient baobabs, towering palm trees, and winding swamps and rivers within Tarangire National Park. Embark on an afternoon drive through the park, searching for herds of hundreds of elephants, ancient rock paintings, over 500 species of birds flying above, and large numbers of game feeding along the Tarangire River, the only water source for wildlife during the dry season.

Afternoon game drive until sunset followed by a sundowner with canapes. (sundowner may be with other lodge guests) Watch the beautiful African sunset while enjoying beverages. Dinner and overnight at Serengeti Sopa Lodge.

Serengeti National Park is possibly the most renowned Tanzania safari park, stretching north to Kenya and bordering Lake Victoria to the west. The name Serengeti comes from the Maasai language meaning 'endless plains'. It is also well known for its animal migration which takes place twice a year. Nearly one million wildebeest and 200,000 zebras move from the northern hills to the south every October and November during the short rains. They then move toward the west and north from April to June. Nowhere on earth is there a sight to rival the spectacle of hoofed animals on the march. Serengeti has the highest concentration of large mammals on this planet and is famous for its lions, the highest concentration found anywhere.

Apart from the big five (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino), one can view the majority of other well-known species of animals on a Tanzania safari.
For birdwatchers, early and late daylight hours are usually the best times to observe the more than 518 species of birds which have been identified in the Serengeti.

Day 6

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a park in the north west of Tanzania and is often called ‘Africa’s Eden’ and the ’8th Natural Wonder of the World’. It contains an old volcano that has collapsed and formed a crater and the steep sides of the crater have become a natural enclosure for a wide variety of wildlife ona Tanzania safari. Lions are in the highest density in the world in the crater so there is an excellent chance of seeing them while on your Tanzania safari. There are herds of wildebeest, zebra, and a lot of buffalo and Grants' gazelles. This is also one of the best places in East Africa to see a black rhino. Hyenas are a common predator and cheetahs are frequently seen. Leopards are in the conservation area but rarely seen along with wild dogs. Just outside the crater’s ridge, tall Maasai herd their cattle and goats over the green pastures through the highland slopes living alongside the wildlife as they have for centuries.

Later in the afternoon, transfer back to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Drive to Tarangire National Park, located in the northwestern corner of Tanzania’s Maasai Steppe, named for the Tarangire River that crosses through the park. During the dry season on a Tanzania safari, the river is often the only source of water for wild animals.

Designated as a national park in 1970, Tarangire covers an area of 2,850 square kilometres (1,100 square miles). Acacia woodland, baobab and palm trees, plains, swamps and rivers make up the landscape of the park. Being one of Tanzania’s lesser-known national parks, it has the feel of an undiscovered Africa on a Tanzania safari.
