  • Old Citadel in Morocco
  • Moroccan city
  • Lush oasis landscape in the Moroccan desert, with date palms
  • Moulay Ismail Mausoleum Meknes is a great photo opportunity on all Morocco vacations.

Morocco is located on the extreme northwestern corner of the African continent bordered by Mauritania and Algeria to the south and the east. The coastline of Morocco is on the Mediterranean Sea as well as the Atlantic Ocean. The western coast faces the Atlantic and is characterised by sandy beaches. To the south-east of Morocco is the Sahara desert, the hottest desert in the world and the third-largest after Antarctica and the Arctic.

Why Consider a Morocco Vacation?

Exotic is the first word that comes to mind to describe Morocco. Ancient cities exude a mysterious ambience leaving you with a strong impression. Also add into the mix, excellent beach resorts, snow-capped mountains, cedar forests, orange groves and the colourful Sahara Desert. It is a country influenced by Roman, Arab, Berber and French civilizations to be experienced on Morocco vacations.

What are the top cities or places to visit in Morocco?

Casablanca

A lively metropolis, Casablanca is the most liberal of Morocco’s cities and its citizens are more open to Western ways than their neighbours which will be experienced on a Morocco vacation package. Located in western Morocco on the Atlantic Ocean, Casablanca is the country’s main port as well as the economic and business centre. It is known for its unique architecture, a blend of traditional Moroccan designs with European styles of the early 20th Century. A modern architectural attraction in Casablanca is the Hassan II Mosque designed by French architect Michel Pinseau. It is the largest mosque in Morocco, the second-largest in Africa and the 3rd largest in the world after those in Mecca and Medina It is a major landmark in Casablanca.  The walls are made of hand-crafted marble and it has a retractable roof. The mosque can hold as many as 105,000 worshippers, 25,000 inside the mosque hall and another 80,000 on the mosque's outside ground.

Marrakech

One of Morocco’s four imperial cities, Marrakech is located at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. A fashionable city with many ties to the past, there is much to see and experience in Marrakech on Morocco vacations. In parts of the city, it is like walking back in time and ending up in the Middle Ages. The central square, Djemaa el-Fna, is the best spot to get acquainted with the old city and start to explore its winding streets and alleyways. At night time, the many cafes and food stalls in the square come to life with music and dance. This is quite a spectacle. The Medina (old quarter) is a UNESCO World Heritage site because it is an impressive example of a major Islamic capital of the Western Mediterranean as well as being a “living historic town”. The architecture and artwork found in the Medina are also remarkable. The labyrinth of streets overflows with souks selling spices, carpets, and trinkets. Elsewhere in Marrakech are the Bahia Palace and El Badi Palace, excellent examples of Islamic architecture. The Majorelle Garden created in the 1920s by the French painter Jacques Majorelle is a two and a half acre botanical landscaped garden. It contains marble pools, banana trees, bamboo groves, coconut palms and bougainvillaea.

Fez

The medieval capital of Morocco, Fez is located in the northern part of the country bordered by the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. Another of Morocco’s four Imperial cities, Fez is considered the country’s cultural and spiritual centre to be visited on Morocco vacations. Its Medina is even more impressive and overwhelming than Marrakech’s with its tangled web of medieval streets. You will find wonderful Islamic artwork and minarets alongside donkey carts and street vendors that give the old quarter its ambience. Fez is also a great spot to enjoy Moroccan cuisine such as mouth-watering lamb tagine cooked with lemon and olives.

Meknes

Quieter and smaller than Fez, Meknes is more laid-back on trips to Morocco. It still offers winding narrow Medina streets and grand buildings of a once Imperial city and was the one-time home of the Moroccan sultanate. There are remnants of three sets of fortifications showing how important Meknes once was.  The city has two districts to explore. The Medina is a vibrant, bustling place full of local shopping souks and narrow lanes containing stalls offering traditional Moroccan crafts, clothing and Morocco's famous slippers. The Imperial City district has plenty of interesting old ruins to explore most dating from the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail (1672 to 1727) when Meknes enjoyed its heyday as the capital of Morocco. The 12th Century Grand Mosque, with its distinctive green-tiled roof, sits right in the heart of the Medina.

Rabat

Located on the Atlantic Ocean, Rabat is Morocco’s capital and third-largest city. Rabat is a UNESCO World Heritage site and recognized as both a modern capital and a historic city. The oldest mosque in the city was built in 1150 while Rabat’s most visible landmark, the Hassan Tower (the minaret of an unfinished mosque) dates to 1195. These ancient landmarks coexist alongside the new town.  The Royal Palace where the Royal Family lives for most of the year is an amazing location to see the most authentic Moroccan architecture. The gates are gigantic and are guarded by soldiers. The Andalusian Gardens are stunning with gorgeous flowers, trees, and fountains. It has an Andalusian feel to it and is reminiscent of Granada’s Alhambra. Although it was built by a French architect in the 20th century, it gives the impression of having been there for a couple of hundreds of years.

Ouarzazate

In the south is Ouarzazate, a UNESCO world heritage site with some of the best preserved Kasbahs. It is from here that you can spend a night in the Sahara Desert on Morocco tours. .

The city of Tetouan, on the Mediterranean and gateway to the Rif mountains, has a medina which again is a UNESCO world heritage site with its Andalusian, Berber and Jewish sectors.
For pure relaxation, Agadir, on the Atlantic coast, is the best known beach resort with its natural parks, secluded beaches and excellent surf. A good place to end your visi on Morocco vacations .

Top places to see on a Morocco Tour

Volubilis

Volubilis is a partly excavated Berber and Roman city near the city of Meknes and commonly considered to be the ancient capital of the kingdom of Mauretania. It was developed from the 3rd Century BC as a Phoenician settlement. Under Roman rule from the 1st Century AD, it expanded significantly with a number of major public buildings including a basilica, temple and triumphal arch. It continued to be inhabited for another 700 years but by the 11th Century, it was abandoned. Although only about half of Volubilis has been excavated, a number of major public buildings are visible. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site on trips to Morocco, listed for being "an exceptionally well-preserved example of a large Roman colonial town on the fringes of the Empire".

The Atlas Mountains

Outside of the cities, you can explore the Atlas Mountains which are home to Morocco’s highest peaks. The mountain range separates the coastlines of the Mediterranean and Atlantic from the Sahara Desert. A 90-minute drive from Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains are convenient to visit and explore on foot or in a 4x4 vehicle. One of the best walks is up the slopes of Mount Toubkal, the highest point in North Africa. The Berbers are the original inhabitants of these vast mountains.  They make a living farming and herding livestock. In the Atlas Mountains, you can even find a world-class ski resort in Ifrane. Best of all the sites in the mountains is Ouarzazate, an incredible UNESCO World Heritage site known for its incredible historical streets.

The Sahara Desert

To the south of the Atlas Mountains is the Sahara Desert where you can go on 4×4 vehicle tours through the sand dunes or ride camels.  The Sahara Desert is one of the most idyllic places to enjoy nature at its best. You can stargaze, spot wildlife and watch amazing sunsets.  From Fez and Marrakech, you can join a tour on Morocco vacations for an overnight stay in the Sahara Desert You sleep in a tent among the sand dunes while enjoying activities such as riding a camel, horse riding, quad biking and sandboarding. You will have dinner under the stars and then retire to your Berber tent. Every night is breathtakingly beautiful.

Best Time to Visit Morocco?

When it comes to weather, the best times to visit are spring and fall when it is warm, dry and pleasant. The summer is scorching hot and the winter is cold especially at night. There is very little rain in Morocco and when it does rain, it is in the winter. In the interior, the temperatures are more extreme. The further you go from the coast, the more extreme the summer and winter weather becomes. The High Atlas Mountains can be visited year-round on a Morocco vacation although it does get cold in winter. Summer on the coast can be pleasant with long sunny days cooled by the ocean breezes but it is the busiest time for beach vacations. The best time to visit the Moroccan Sahara is between October and April when daytime temperatures are bearable. However, in December and January, night-time temperatures can plummet below freezing.

What Should I Know Before Going to Morocco?

Men can usually dress however they like but women should respectfully consider dressing more conservatively. When visiting mosques, cover yourself if you are wearing shorts and T-shirts, women especially. More established shops will take credit cards but most smaller markets and street vendors will not. Be ready to pay with the local currency. If shopping in markets or Medinas, learn to barter as bartering is an important part of the culture. Bear in mind this is a Muslim country and most shops and attractions close on Fridays. Moroccans speak a mixture of Arabic, Berber, English, and French. English is widely spoken in the larger cities. When taking photographs of people, ask if it is in order to do so.
