Thermal Explorer Highway & Volcanic Loop Experience Self Drive

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,609

FIRST-CLASS | SELF-DRIVE: Explore New Zealand’s largest lakes, geothermal landscapes, snow-capped volcanoes, prehistoric cave systems, and mountain ranges on this 10-day road trip. Drive from Auckland to Napier with stops in Hamilton, Rotorua, Taupō, and Whanganui National Park, and immerse yourself in Māori culture as you discover the geothermal heart of New Zealand’s North Island.

Your 10-day New Zealand road trip begins with a two-night stay in Auckland. Enjoy a day tour of the City of Sails with stops at Auckland Domain City Park formed from volcanic activity 140,000 years ago, Davenport’s Narrow Neck Bridge, the summit of Mount Victoria, and the Auckland Fish Market. Pick up your rental car and begin your New Zealand road trip by driving south along the Thermal Explorer Highway to the city of Hamilton. Stop at the famous Waitomo Caves and experience the stellar glow worm skies, crystal tapestries, limestone formations, and icicle-shaped stalactites on foot or by raft. Continue your adventure to Rotorua, the heart of New Zealand’s geothermal activity, and embark on a sunset tour around New Zealand’s second-largest lake or marvel at spouting geysers, mud pools, and boiling lakes. The Lord of the Rings fans can also make a short detour to visit the Hobbiton Movie Set and enjoy a meal at the Green Dragon Inn, but be aware that you must book this in advance.

Proceed to the living Māori Village, Whakarewarewa, and gain a deeper understanding of the ancient forests and Māori culture with local guides before enjoying a two-night stay in Taupō. You will have plenty of time to visit Huka Falls, Taupō Bungy, or the famous Mine Bay Māori Carvings before driving to Whanganui National Park. Continue south to Mount Tongariro and tackle the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, considered one of New Zealand’s greatest day hikes. Spend the last two nights of your trip in the “food basket” of New Zealand, Hawke’s Bay, and the city of Napier, where you can enjoy excellent food and wine and try your hand at surfing.
