Machu Picchu & the Galapagos Islands

Duration
12 Days
Prices From:
US$ 4,605

This itinerary combines Cusco, the Sacred Valley and then Machu Picchu, the “Lost City” by train with a Quito stopover and a cruise through the stunning Galapagos Islands

This 12 day tour of Ecuador and Peru includes picturesque colonial cities, the majestic ruins of Machu Picchu and the unique wildlife of the Galapagos Islands.

The capital of Ecuador, Quito contains the best preserved and most authentic historic centre in Latin America. Spend a day touring the world’s second highest capital before flying to the jewel in Ecuador’s wildlife crown, the Galapagos. Home to one of the world’s most unique ecosystems, this archipelago has been a haven not just for its wildlife, but for those studying it. Most notable of these was Charles Darwin, whose observations here contributed significantly to his theory of evolution. Naturalist guides take you ashore between cruises through the marine reserve.

Return to Quito for your flight to Cuzco, gateway to the SacredValley and former capital of the Inca Empire. The surrounding area is filled with amazing ruins, including Ollantaytambo, a major religious centre for the Incas, and Pisac, noted for its varied markets. Have a country estate lunch on the banks of the Urubamba, then discover the Maras Salt Pools and the sights of the SacredValley.

Hop the train bound for Machu Picchu, the legendary lost Inca city voted the world’s #1 attraction by Trip Advisor users in 2013. Perched 8,000ft above sea level, this spectacular 15th century ruin has been known to outsiders for just over a century, and much of its purpose within Inca civilization remains a mystery. There are many sites to explore, each with its own story – told with varying degrees of accuracy and imagination! A guided tour will help you get your bearings and take you to all the key sights. With your spare time (and enough energy!) consider a hike to the peak of Wayna Picchu for a truly stunning view.

Day 2

Quito City Tour and Equator Line with Lunch

A wonderful tour through the streets and main squares of Quito's Historic Centre, the first city in the world to be declared by the UNESCO as "World Cultural Heritage" site.

Your comprehensive city tour includes visits to residential neighborhoods at the northern end of the city, visiting the "Guapulo Mirador", passing through the 12 of October Avenue up to the Culture House and the Legislative Palace. This is where the rock murals that depict the history of Ecuador can be appreciated. The tour will then continue through the Gran Colombia Avenue to the Basilica Church. Be delighted by the delicate and unusual beauty of the colonial Convent Treasures at the Chapels of El Rosario and Pompeya whose walls and columns are decorated in gold with an original blend of vegetable and anthropomorphic figures - a vivid example of the world famous Quito School of Art. The Convent of Santo Domingo displays colossal doors and ceilings covered with oil paintings and gold leaf. Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant of the area.

Next you will stop at the "San Juan Mirador" where you will experience beautiful views of Colonial Quito. Journey north to the equator where your guide will show the differences in the gravitational influence either side of the equatorial line as well as a brief overview of indigenous cultures.

Mainland to the Galapagos, Bartolome

This morning, make a dry landing on the northern part of Plaza Island. The walk will begin with an impressive cactus forest surrounded by land and marine iguanas. As you reach the highest point, you may encounter tropic birds and a bachelor sea lion colony.

South Plaza has a large colony of the smaller sized land iguanas. The population is approximately 300 individuals. Due to their geographic and genetic proximity with marine iguanas, you will also encounter the unique Galapagos hybrid iguana.

This afternoon you will visit North Seymour Island. This landmass was formed by a series of underwater volcanic eruptions, which deposited layers of lava on the ocean floor. An approximately two-hour walk amidst large nesting colonies of blue-footed boobies, magnificent and great frigate birds, and swallow-tailed gulls for an in depth encounter with sea bird breeding cycles and sea lions. You will also encounter land iguanas, and on a lucky day, you might even come across the endemic Galapagos Snake.

Day 9

Moray and Maras Salt Pools

Today you pass through unspoiled and picturesque Andean communities on our way to the Incan agricultural experimental center of Moray, famous for its sunken amphitheatre, made up of four circular terraces, which appear to fade away into the earth like an artificial crater. The site was apparently an Inca agricultural research station filled with fertile earth and watered by a complex irrigation system, designed for experimenting with crops at various altitudes.

Continue onto the impressive Maras salt pools formed by water emerging from a lake inside the mountain in the Urubamba Valley. An amazing view is offered of the evaporating ponds used for the extraction of salt. Learn about ancestral techniques, which are still used, in agricultural, irrigation and salt-recollection tasks, as well as in Andean festivals and rites.
