Machu Picchu & the Galapagos

Duration
12 Days
Prices From:
US$ 5,593

Combine two of South America’s (and the world’s) greatest landmarks on one itinerary with built-in savings. After visiting Lima, spend a few days in the Sacred Valley of the Incas and see Machu Picchu. Then head to Quito and connect to the Galapagos Islands to explore their fascinating environments and see their incredible animals.

This 12-day South American vacation showcases the continent’s two most popular attractions: Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands. It includes moderate accommodations, small group tours, and is perfect for first-time travellers to South America.

Your journey begins in Lima, the capital of Peru and one of the world’s greatest gastronomic cities. Spend a day exploring the city’s most popular sites, heading from the ocean-side parks of trendy Miraflores and San Isidro to the colonial churches and palaces of Playa Mayor, home to the Presidential Palace, Archbishop’s Palace, and Lima Cathedral. Be sure to try some of the city’s famous food before you leave, such as ceviche or the Japanese fusion styles of Nikkei cuisine. Connect to Cusco, the gateway to the Sacred Valley and the former capital of the Inca Empire. Spend a night or two acclimating to the high altitude and exploring some of the most popular sites in the Sacred Valley not named “Machu Picchu.” You’ll journey to Ollantaytambo to see the massive Incan fortress and Chincheros to visit the local markets to shop for traditional Andean crafts.

Hop the train bound for Machu Picchu, the legendary Inca citadel that was constructed in the 14th century and was lost until 1911 when Hiram Bingham introduced it to the western world. Explore the ruins in the company of an expert guide who’ll bring the citadel to life with stories about its past and the heights of the Inca Empire. After passing along the circuit through the site, consider climbing to the top of nearby Huayna Picchu for truly breathtaking views of the citadel and the surrounding, cloud-draped mountains. Return to Cusco for another day and explore the city at freedom. If you haven’t seen it already, venture to the ruins of Sacsayhuaman above the town to see the massive Incan stones and admire views of the city.

Fly northwest to Quito, the capital of Ecuador and one of the best-preserved historic cities in South America. Spend a day touring the world’s second-highest capital before flying to the jewel in Ecuador’s wildlife crown: the Galapagos Islands. Home to one of the world’s most unique ecosystems, this archipelago has been a haven for wildlife and instrumental in formulating modern biology, most notably Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. Spend three full days on the islands, crossing the volcanic landscapes and see the incredible animals that call the islands home, from the famous Giant Tortoises to blue-footed boobies to Galapagos penguins, marine iguanas, and flamingos.

At the end of your adventure, return to the mainland and connect back home.

Quito City Tour

The place to start exploring Ecuador is Colonial Quito: a city of narrow cobblestone streets lined with whitewashed walls and, rising above, the steeples and cupolas of the city's many spectacularly decorated historic churches. The city has one of the best preserved colonial centers in all South America, and its integrity was assured in 1978 when the United Nations declared Quito a World Cultural Heritage site.

Morning visit to colonial Quito. We will walk through the Main Plaza, where you will see the Government Palace, La Compania, and some of the most important churches built around the XVI and XVII centuries, including the San Francisco Monastery which was started 5 days after the founding of the city in 1534. Then we will visit the city's famous La Ronda street, where we will learn about traditional work in Colonial Quito.

For our last stop, we will also be visiting the 'Panecillo', the hill that dominates the South of the city, and where we will be able to admire the famous statue of Our Lady of the Panecillo and enjoy spectacular views of Quito.

Mainland to Galapagos, Santa Cruz

Today marks your departure from mainland Ecuador to Baltra (approx. 2 and half hour flight). You will be picked up at the airport by your guides and taken on a ten minute bus drive to the pier to board the Corals.

This afternoon make a dry landing. Visit the Galapagos giant tortoises and land iguanas breeding program, where the famous Lonesome George (last surviving specimen of Pinta Island) lived for decades. The center is managed by the Galapagos National Park's staff with the collaboration of scientists from the Charles Darwin Station. Here, eggs taken from Pinzon, Santiago and Santa Cruz Islands hatch without the danger of introduced species. After artificial incubation; the "galapaguitos" (newborn tortoises) are reared until the age of 5, when they are released in their native habitats, having the enough capabilities to survive alone. Since the 70's, more than 2,000 specimens have returned to their native islands. In addition, the Darwin Station works in several scientific projects and botanical research, providing environmental education to local communities, schools and tourists. If time helps, it is possible to visit Puerto Ayora town.
