Social Conventions

When visiting Bolivia, it is important to show respect for traditions and beliefs and to ask permission before entering religious ceremonies or festivals. It is considered very offensive to call rural Bolivians Indians, instead, they should be called campesinas. Casual clothing is standard unless it is a formal occasion. If travelling to the highlands, people there tend to dress more conservatively.

Bolivia’s official language is Spanish, however, the country is known as having the largest indigenous population in South America and so indigenous languages like Quechua, Aymara and Guarani are also spoken. English tends to be spoken by business people and officials.

While the majority of the population of Bolivia is Roman Catholic, there is a Protestant minority and indigenous beliefs and traditions are still important to a large part of the country.
