Cruising Antarctica Crossing the Circle: Ushuaia to Ushuaia

Duration
14 Days
Prices From:
US$ 15,495

DELUXE | CRUISE: Follow in the footsteps of Shackleton and Scott by venturing to the world’s southernmost continent. Sail from Argentina across the Drake Passage, cruise south of the Antarctic Circle and set foot on Antarctica, spotting penguins and seals while braving the world’s most daunting and inhospitable climate.

This 14-day cruise takes you across the tempestuous waters of the Southern Ocean to the Antarctica Peninsula.

Your adventure begins in Ushuaia, a resort town at Tierra del Fuego, the “End of the World” and southernmost tip of South America. Ushuaia is a bustling port town that caters to adventurers. Enjoy a pint at the world’s southernmost microbrewery before boarding the Sea Adventurer for your journey to the home of the South Pole.

The Sea Adventurer is a robust vessel capable of carrying 117 passengers. The ship is made for withstanding the cold water and hard ice of the Southern Ocean, but it’s also equipped for your comfort as you cross the icy sea. It has a lounge, bar, dining room with windows gazing out onto the ocean and comfortable cabins that’ll serve as your home onboard.

Aboard the Sea Adventurer, cross the Drake Passage, named after the explorer Sir Francis Drake. This 800-kilometre passage between Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands is the safest route to Antarctica. Not that the passage is completely free of rough weather: ice and stormy seas are a guarantee of Antarctica. But the conditions are much preferable to other routes and allow you to spot humpback whales on deck or keep an eye out for high-soaring albatrosses.

While this southern continent was completely unvisited just 100 years ago, it’s now accessible to intrepid adventurers and Globetrotters. Graham Land on the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula is the continent’s main point of access. As you dip south of the Antarctic Circle, you’ll join an elite group of world travelers.

Breathe in the chill air and witness the majesty of the icebergs and waterways of this great continent. Brave the frigid waters of Orne Harbour and kayak alongside migrating whales. Take a zodiac out to see calving glaciers. Visit Port Lockroy, where a former research station has been converted into a museum. On Petermann Island, examine Gentoo chicks at the island’s breeding colony. In no time you’ll become an expert at identifying the Antarctic wildlife. You’ll tell an Adelie from a Gentoo penguin or a leopard from a Weddell seal as easily as you’d tell a dog from a cat.

This trip to Antarctica offers a rare glimpse of the most remote and extreme environment on the planet. It’s an adventure like no other.
