DELUXE | PRIVATE-GUIDED: Explore what many consider to be Norway’s most essential stop, Bergen. Set amid spectacular fjords, this short addition to your Northern Europe vacation immerses you in Nordic history and natural beauty.
AT YOUR SERVICE. This is a great idea for experiencing Bergen where you can choose your preferred level of accommodation. It can, of course, be modified and/or extended. As we are experts in customizing itineraries to suit your personal interests, time available and budget, we at Goway are at your service!
This 4-day stop in Bergen gives you ample time to enjoy Norway’s historic former capital.
The heart of the Norwegian fishing trade, Bergen offers visitors a UNESCO World Heritage listed city centre dating back to the 1700s, though the city itself dates back to 1070AD. Enjoy a private city tour, which includes Bryggen, the Heritage Listed Hanseatic Quarter. Fishing has always been integral to the city’s economy, all the way back to the Middle Ages when Bergen exported dried fish throughout Northern Europe. As you visit the various sights, you’ll see how this history has shaped the city you see today…that’s if you’re not too distracted by the spectacular mountains that surround it. With that in mind, your tour will include some impressive views as well.
The following day is devoted to the Sognefjord, one of Norway’s greatest natural treasures, just a short boat ride north of Bergen. Your express boat takes you up the fjord to Balestrand, a village that has inspired artists such as Adelsteen Normann and Hans Gude, and today supports its own art village. Seeing the snow-capped peaks looming over the town, it’s easy to see the appeal. In fact, Balestrand is so serene that in 2016, the chief of police formally suggested closing down its police station! You’ll also visit the Norwegian Glacier Museum in Mundal, where you’ll learn more about the fjord’s relationship with the surrounding area.
Return to Bergen for departure.
STAY LONGER IN BERGEN. This idea can be extended and/or modified: Go to Day Trips for some ideas. They are just a sample as we can personalize your stay according to your interests, time available and budget. We look forward to being of service and organizing an awesome travel experience…for you!

Bergen City Tour - Private
A guided tour of the city, including a visit to the famous Fish and Flower Market, the old Bryggen Harbour with its gabled pack houses, the popular Hanseatic Quarter and the ancient Maria Church.
Bergen was founded in 1070 A.D. During the 12th and 13th centuries, when the Kingdom of Norway was at the peak of its power and there was lively communication between the mother country and the Norwegian colonies in the islands to the west, Bergen was the capital of Norway. The Norwegian kings resided here, and many historical events took place in this busy port, which in those days had no fewer than 27 churches and abbeys. Bergen owed wealth and prominence to the fish export trade - mainly dried fish which was one of the most important products of the Middle Ages.
The town grew to become the largest in Norway. Today, however, Bergen is the second largest city in Norway, surpassed only by Oslo, the present capital. Continue along Bryggen - the Hanseatic Quarter of Bergen, past the well-known Fish Market and drive towards the peninsula of Nordnes with its typical 19th century white painted wooden houses. On both sides of the peninsula you can see the harbour.
Continue past Fredriksberg Fortress and the Aquarium of Bergen - housing one of the largest collections of marine life in Europe. Proceed along the west-side of Bergen, crossing the Puddefjord and continue past the residential area of Laksevaag before we reach Krohnegaarden with a splendid view of the suburb of Fyllingsdalen, one of the largest suburbs of Bergen with a population of approx. 25.000.
You pass Boenes and continue along the Nordaas Lake where the composer Grieg's home is situated, and then you pass Gamlehaugen, the residence of the Royal Family when they are visiting Bergen.

The trip takes you by train from Bergen to Voss and continues by bus to the delightful little village of Ulvik. If you're lucky enough to be here in May, you will see the beautiful fruit trees in full blossom. From Ulvik, the trip continues by boat to Eidfjord where you will experience a sightseeing trip to Vøringsfossen waterfall (Norway's biggest waterfall) and the Norwegian Nature Centre Hardanger.
The round trip continues with a beautiful boat trip to Norheimsund, where a bus will be waiting to take you back to Bergen. You will pass the cascading Steinsdalsfossen waterfall on the way. It is also possible to start the tour from Bergen by bus and travel in the opposite direction.
