European Stopover & City Map

AT YOUR SERVICE. This is a great idea for experiencing Bergen where you can choose your preferred level of accommodation. It can, of course, be modified and/or extended. As we are experts in customizing itineraries to suit your personal interests, time available and budget, we at Goway are at your service!

This 4-day stop in Bergen gives you ample time to enjoy Norway’s historic former capital.

The heart of the Norwegian fishing trade, Bergen offers visitors a UNESCO World Heritage listed city centre dating back to the 1700s, though the city itself dates back to 1070AD. Enjoy a private city tour, which includes Bryggen, the Heritage Listed Hanseatic Quarter. Fishing has always been integral to the city’s economy, all the way back to the Middle Ages when Bergen exported dried fish throughout Northern Europe. As you visit the various sights, you’ll see how this history has shaped the city you see today…that’s if you’re not too distracted by the spectacular mountains that surround it. With that in mind, your tour will include some impressive views as well.

The following day is devoted to the Sognefjord, one of Norway’s greatest natural treasures, just a short boat ride north of Bergen. Your express boat takes you up the fjord to Balestrand, a village that has inspired artists such as Adelsteen Normann and Hans Gude, and today supports its own art village. Seeing the snow-capped peaks looming over the town, it’s easy to see the appeal. In fact, Balestrand is so serene that in 2016, the chief of police formally suggested closing down its police station! You’ll also visit the Norwegian Glacier Museum in Mundal, where you’ll learn more about the fjord’s relationship with the surrounding area.

Return to Bergen for departure.

Day 2

Bergen City Tour - Private

A guided tour of the city, including a visit to the famous Fish and Flower Market, the old Bryggen Harbour with its gabled pack houses, the popular Hanseatic Quarter and the ancient Maria Church.

Bergen was founded in 1070 A.D. During the 12th and 13th centuries, when the Kingdom of Norway was at the peak of its power and there was lively communication between the mother country and the Norwegian colonies in the islands to the west, Bergen was the capital of Norway. The Norwegian kings resided here, and many historical events took place in this busy port, which in those days had no fewer than 27 churches and abbeys. Bergen owed wealth and prominence to the fish export trade - mainly dried fish which was one of the most important products of the Middle Ages.

The town grew to become the largest in Norway. Today, however, Bergen is the second largest city in Norway, surpassed only by Oslo, the present capital. Continue along Bryggen - the Hanseatic Quarter of Bergen, past the well-known Fish Market and drive towards the peninsula of Nordnes with its typical 19th century white painted wooden houses. On both sides of the peninsula you can see the harbour.

Continue past Fredriksberg Fortress and the Aquarium of Bergen - housing one of the largest collections of marine life in Europe. Proceed along the west-side of Bergen, crossing the Puddefjord and continue past the residential area of Laksevaag before we reach Krohnegaarden with a splendid view of the suburb of Fyllingsdalen, one of the largest suburbs of Bergen with a population of approx. 25.000.

You pass Boenes and continue along the Nordaas Lake where the composer Grieg's home is situated, and then you pass Gamlehaugen, the residence of the Royal Family when they are visiting Bergen.

Day 3

Sognefjord with visit to Boyabreen Glacier and the Norwegian Glacier Museum

This fjord trip takes you through beautiful landscape on the Sognefjord!

The journey starts in Bergen every day at 8:00AM sailing northbound with express boat along the coast before heading into the great Sognefjord on your way to Balestrand.

On arrival at Balestrand at 11:50AM – a village that is a favorite among artists, you will go direct from the express boat and change to a smaller boat that will take you further into the beautiful Faerlandsfjord before arriving Faerland. The narrow Faerlandsfjord with its steep and forested mountainsides leads you to the edges of the majestic Jostedal Glacier. Along the fjord, there are many hamlets and farms. Most of these farms are deserted, and they now serve as reminders of people's toil and challenges in former times.

The water in the fjord is frequently colored light green because of the glacial melt water. At the head of the fjord, you find interesting attractions such as The Norwegian Glacier Museum and The Norwegian Book Town. Formerly the only way to travel to Faerland was by boat, but now highway 5 connects the village to Sogndal and Skei/Forde. There are few roads along the fjord and most of the small farms and hamlets have been deserted. From the pier in Mundal where the boat arrives, a bus will take you to the Norwegian Glacier Museum where you will have the time to learn about the history of the Glacier.

From the Norwegian Glacier Museum the trip continuous with the bus to Brevasshytta Cabin where you can see the Boyabreen Glacier just 100 meters from the cabin. There will be a stop at approx. 45 min where you can enjoy the beautiful view of the glacier and buy some local food. The bus returns to Fjorland quay, and the sightseeing boat takes you back to Balestrand. Upon arrival at Balestrand, the express boat will take you back to Bergen.
