Merida was founded by Spanish explorer Francisco de Montejo on 6 January 1542, and this jewel of colonial architecture is known as the Yucatan Peninsula's White City. See the city's many treasures on a guided bus tour of its mansions and monuments.
The site that was to become Merida was already a great city known as T'ho to the Mayans long before Francisco de Montejo arrived. The stones of the ancient city were used in building the Catedral de San Ildefonso in Merida's main square.
Also in the central square are other colonial structures, including La Casa de Montejo, Government Palace, and Palacio Municipal. The city's main avenue, Paseo de Montejo, is lined with colonial buildings such as the Palacio Canton and numerous striking monuments.
